How do we solve the crime? • Read the entire word problem. • First we must figure out what we are looking for. What is the word problem asking us? • Write a sentence to yourself.
Steps to Solving Word Problems • UNDERSTAND • Restate what the question is asking you. Use the clues to help you! • PLAN • Make a plan on how you will solve the problem. For example, will you add, subtract, multiply, or divide. • SOLVE • Use your plan and the information (clues) from the problem to answer the question. • EXPLAIN • How did you solve the problem? Use math detective words to say what you did.
The Crime... • At a recent park clean-up, Jack picked up 30 pieces of trash. Emily picked up 25 and Annie picked up the most of all, 40! How many pieces of trash did the girls pick up all together?
Understand the problem At a recent park clean-up, Jack picked up 30 pieces of trash. Emily picked up 25 and Annie picked up the most of all, 40! How many pieces of trash did the girls pick up all together? • What are we trying to solve? • What are our clues? Hint: Read the problem carefully! • How much trash did the GIRLS pick up? • Emily picked up 25 pieces of trash • Annie picked up 40 pieces of trash Sometimes, word problems give you extra information!
Plan • How can we solve this problem? How can we use the clues we have to find the answer? • We can add the amount of trash Emily picked up to the amount of trash Annie picked up to find out how much trash the girls picked up. • We don’t need to add the amount of trash Jack picked up because Jack is not a girl.
Solve • Use your plan to solve the problem! 25 + 40 = 25 + 40= 65 pieces of trash picked up
Explain You have your answer. As a detective you must explain how you got it! Use Math Detective words to explain (using sentences) what you did to find your answer. Use the Detective Word list.

Our Explanation • I added the trash that Emily and Annie both picked up to find the sum. The sum is the amount of trash that both girls picked up. So my answer is 65 pieces of trash.
