  2. DANGERSOF THE TRAIL There are many dangers of the trail. There is loosing your trail, freezing, loosing a dog, falling through the ice and being attacked by a wild moose! You must be prepared when running the race. BE SAFE!

  3. NOME Nome is the finish to the iditarod. The first place winner gets a truck and $50,000 . The first place winner in 2012 was Dallas Seavey. Image of finish line athttp://iditarod.com/race/checkpoint/?id=227

  4. THE TWINS Anna Berington has a love of animals, and loves sports. She horseback rode until she was in high school. This was her first time running the Iditarod. She came in 43rd place, but stuck with her older sister the entire way until they crossed the finish line holding hands in Nome. Kristy Berington also had a love for horseback riding and sports. This was not her first time running the Iditarod , but this was a new experience because she ran it with her younger sister. She came in 44th because she let her sister sign into Nome before her.   5. Red Lantern Award The red lantern goes to the person that comes in last because it shows even though you’re last we still keep the lights on for you. That you tried your best and had fun.   6. Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes Alaskan huskies and malamutes are the main breed of dog used in the Iditarod. If dogs are injured they will be dropped of at a checkpoint and flown back to Anchorage.

  7. Weather The winter climate in Alaska is a rather cold one. It is usually below freezing and the main precipitation is snow, sleet and slush. Warmer clothing is suggested when traveling in Alaska.
