Status of WV Rules and Technology Options

This presentation by Randall Harris from the WV Office of Miners Health Safety and Training provides an overview of alternative escape options for miners who cannot barricade, as well as communication challenges in the mining industry. It discusses currently approved shelters, their structural and life support requirements, and introduces new technologies such as the LifeShelter, Dräger Escape Shelter, Kennedy Shelter, Mine Refuge Chamber, Fresh Air Bay, Mine Safehouse, and LifePod. The presentation also addresses the need for wireless communication options, two-way communications, tracking systems, and the submission of Communication Tracking Plans by operators. Finally, it discusses spectrum options, including through the earth, mid-frequency, leaky feeder (VHF & UHF), and Wi-Fi mesh, as well as the importance of next-generation redundancy.
