Phase I: Learning Experiences • Individually: Brainstorm some of your favorite hobbies or interests on a sheet of paper or using the computer. • Table/ Group: Discuss how we can relate those hobbies/ interests to a profession or other interests that were not added individually. (Write the professions/ ideas your group comes up with next to your hobbies.)

  3. Phase I: Learning Experiences Example: My hobby is building with legos. What are some professions that may use that skill when I grow up? • Architecture • Engineering • Carpentry

Phase I: Learning Experiences Discuss: • Why would a research project about something you’re interested in be important? • What is the difference between work you enjoy and work you dislike? • What is your favorite hobby/interest and why? • What aspects of your hobby/interest make it fun? • What careers also involve these aspects? • How can involvement in your hobby/interest impact others? • If you had unlimited resources and time available for your hobby/interest, what would you do?

Phase II: Independent Research • Using your topic plan of action, consider:  What is the historical context of my topic?  What are important points in my topic’s history?  Who affected my topic’s history?  What purposes does my topic serve?  What would society/the world be like without my topic?  Why would other people consider my topic important?  What may be the future of my topic?

Phase II: Independent Research Topic Proposal: • Choose topic • Choose resources to find answers to questions: primary and secondary sources, correspondence with experts on the subject, polls within the school, etc. • Hands-on activity (product) ideas that fit the topic chosen • Find what TEKS relate to the project: • The student should identify TEKS from two topic-related subject areas that will be addressed throughout this project. • The Topic Proposal must be approved by the instructor.

  10. Phase II: Independent Research Communication: • Ideas to present student projects: • Class presentation/ lesson/ interactive game • School exhibit • Parent night/ day

Phase II: Independent Research • All projects should include: • The Topic Proposal including TEKS addressed • A log, notes, or resource process sheets • Timeline/checklist • The product • Proof of participation in an outside activity, if needed • A Works Cited page Optional: An audiotape or videotape of the presentation, including an unscripted Q&A session
