  2. Choice Theory is a philosophy that was theorized by William Glasser. • He believes that we all inherently have a choice in our decisions and behaviors. • He believes that we are all motivated by 5 basic needs. What is Choice Theory?

  3. Power (which includes achievement and feeling worthwhile as well as winning). • Love & Belonging (this includes groups as well as families or loved ones). • Freedom (includes independence, autonomy, your own 'space'). • Fun (includes pleasure and enjoyment). • Survival (includes nourishment, shelter, sex). 5 Basic Needs

  4. Children want to feel in control. By allowing them the “choice” of their actions they feel that they have a perceived sense of control . By incorporating Glasser’s 5 Basic Needs into your behavioral model for your classroom the students will “buy in” more readily.

  5. Classroom Individuals • Care Bear program • Stoplight • Happy Tickets • Have the students set the classroom rules • Behavior card (small incremental rewards, stickers, skittles, etc) • Daily Behavior Chart to be sent home • Verbal or visual prompts Strategies for Teachers

  6. Control • Change • Cope As Teacher’s we need to remember the 3 C’s

  7. Can we always control our students behavior? • No we can’t. They are in control of their behaviors. But we can implement plans that help them choose the appropriate behavior. Control

  8. Can we change our student’s behavior? -Yes we can. By implementing appropriate classroom tools and meeting their basic needs with those tools you are empowering the students to make good choices choices and foster a positive learning environment. Change

  9. Can students learn to cope in situations when their basic needs are not being temporarily met. • Yes they can. Once the students have a system in place and they have had the “buy-in” they can adapt to their situation even if for a short period of time. For students that have a hard time transitioning to new situations this is when you would use the individual plan . Cope

  10. Students need to feel if they are in control and are making choices. Creating the atmosphere that allows the student to perceive that she or he has that power can go a long way in maintaining a enjoyable academic environment. Conclusion
