Life • Born on the island of Samos in Greece approximately 570 B.C. • An expert in many areas, including reincarnation and religious rituals. • Lived an extremely disciplined life which involved dietary restrictions, religious rituals, and self-control. • Did not keep any written accounts of his thoughts or ideas. • Headed the secret brotherhood that worshiped numbers and numerical relationships and tried to explain music, the gods, the cosmos, etc. mathematically.

Contributions to Mathematics • Started a school in Croton that emphasized the teaching and learning of Mathematics. • Identified irrational numbers • Applied mathematics to music and found that strings (on instruments) with lengths that are whole numbers produce harmonious tones • Identified properties of numbers, such as odd, even, and perfect. • May have identified the five regular solids • Introduced geometrical algebra (using geometric figures to solve equations) • Introduced the Pythagorean Theorem
