This is not a “how-to” guide. • This short presentation is meant to demonstrate the effectiveness of using blogs as an educational tool. • There are free hosting sites that walk you through the process of how to get a Blog up and running. • BLOGGER • http://www.blogger.com/start • WORDPRESS • http://en.wordpress.com/features

Definition of BLOG: • A contraction of the term “web log,” meaning a log of a series of events on the internet • Usually maintained by a single individual, but can be maintained by a group • Provides commentary or news on a particular subject • Contains primarily written word • Subcategories of video, music, audio (podcasting), art, & journalism blogs prevalent

  5. Shhh! Don’t tell your students… • Blogs are all about reading and writing . What a great way to get students to do both! Using Blogs in Education. • Using blogs in education will: • Help to create connections that were previously very difficult or impossible • Help to provide new channels of information and knowledge • Promote the use of technology • Promote writing habits • Promote reading habits • Promote research skills

Guidelines for Blogs. • When creating a blog to use in education you must: • Creating a safe blogging environment: • Block access to commercial sites that allow students to blog and connect with other sites • Create a standard Acceptable Use Policy and have students sign it before using the blog. • There are sites like http://classblogmeister.com that provide passworded class blogs • Set up a meeting with parents explaining the blog, how you plan to use it, and show them how to access it and monitor it.

  7. Uses for Blogs in Education. • Ways to use Blogs in Education: • Distribute information. Upload to your class blog, and all students can access it. • Host online discussions – Using a site like http://edublogs.org/ you can host an online discussion all students can participate in. • Create a class/school publication. (school newspaper) • Get students to write. • Allow students to create their own digital portfolios of their work. • Blogs present, organize, and protect student work as digital portfolios.

  8. Uses for Blogs in Education. • Ways to use Blogs in Education (continued): • Allows for pre-class preparation, dialogue generation, creates an effective way to introduce students to new material as well as review materials that are no longer being discussed in class. • Replace you class newsletter. • Share lesson plans with students and parents. • Integrate media. Blogs allow you to embed video, multimedia presentations, slideshows for students to all experience. • Blogs allow students and parents to comment of educational issues.

  9. Institute of Technology. The newest high school in the Syracuse School District has a student-created Blog, with the blessing of the school and district. In fact, there are two of them up and running.
