LSTA • 18 competitive applications $2.5 million • 22 priority applications $9.5 million • Award letters by early July • CLA’s Collaborative Summer Reading Program • Very successful and will continue for summer 2008 • Manuals for every library facility (except bookmobiles) • Training sessions, website for resources, listserv for idea sharing

Out-of-School-Time (OST) Online Homework Help • 9 new libraries, total of 54 LSTA-supported participating libraries • 4 using Tutor.com’s Live Homework Help • 4 using Brainfuse’s HelpNow • Service provider for Los Angeles Public Library not yet determined • For information, contact Cindy Mediavilla at cmediavilla@library.ca.gov

  9. California of the Past Digital Story Station • 6 pilot sites - receive a digital story station, a $7,500 grant, on-site training • Stories recorded uploaded onto a central website of stories • For information, contact Kathy Low at klow@library.ca.gov

  10. Transforming Life after 50: Baby Boomers and Public Libraries • 78 million born between 1946 and 1964 – Healthiest/wealthiest in their 50’s • By 2010, 1 in every 5 Californians will be over 60 • Matt Thornhill, boomer guru, webcast August 7th

Training institute set for Nov. 27-29, 2007 in Pasadena • Applications for institute available on August 1st, due September 14th • Announcements of participants October 1st • Participants will be asked to complete community needs assessment • Grant proposals for service plans for 2008/09 due May 1, 2008 • Participants announced in early summer 2008 • For information, contact Suzanne Flint at sflint@library.ca.gov

California Center for the Book • Received 2007 Boorstin award for Book Clubs in a Box/Mysterious California • Slogan – We help librarians and teachers get California reading • Highly successful State Poet Laureate tour in partnership with California Arts Council • CSL/Center partnering with PBS to promote “The War,” premiering 9/23/07 • Program packets to all public libraries in August • October National Issue forum with film-maker Ken Burns in development • For information, contact Mary Menzel at mmenzel@ucla.edu
