  1. Why Do We Think Milk is important? By Yorda Hailit

  2. Milk • Milk has a vital role in the development and health of bones and teeth.

  3. Calcium • Milk is an excellent source of calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients. Some other examples are vitamin A, magnesium, phosphorous, fat, zinc, and B12.

  4. Canada’s Food Guide • Canada’s Food Guide recommends 2 to 3 servings of milk or milk alternatives that are lower in fat for adults.

  5. What kind of milk? • Adults are advised to drink skim 1% or 2% milk everyday. • But in reality, you don’t get enough nutrients with these milks.

  6. Full Fat is better. Why? • Our bodies can not digest the protein or absorb the calcium from milk without the fat. • Vitamin A and D are fat-soluble , so you can not absorb them from milk without the fat. • Milk fat contains glycosphingolipids, a type of fat linked to immune system health and cell metabolism.

  7. Hormones & Milk Another factor to consider when choosing milk is hormones. • Hormones are chemicals that are produced naturally in the bodies of animals and humans. • In our bodies, we have different kinds of hormones. • Hormones control important functions in our bodies, such as growth, development, and reproduction.

  8. Why are hormones used in Milk & Meat • Some hormones can make young animals gain weight faster. • They helps companies reduce waiting time, and these are used in meat industries. They can also be used to increase milk production. • The man-made steroid drugs can increase the risk for breast cancer because of increased estrogen.

  9. What kinds of hormones are added in milk? • Estrogen • Testosterone

  10. Should we be worried about hormones in milk? • There are a lot of studies & research being done about it. • Some scientists believe there is a risk for cancer & other diseases. They suggest more research is needed. • Other scientists believe it is 100 percent safe. • You can do your own research & decide for yourself.

  11. Organic milk & other alternatives Milk Alternatives • Organic milk is not treated with growth hormones or antibiotic products. It is more expensive but healthier. • We have other milk alternatives: soy, rice, oat, almonds, hemp, flax, and quinoa.
