  1. Metaphors of the Messiah Grape Expectations John 15:1-5 by: Jay Brennan

  2. 7 “I AM” Statements of Jesus • The Bread of Life 6:25 • The Light of the World 8:12 • The Gate 10:7 • The Good Shepherd 10:11 • The Way, The Truth and The Life 14:6 • The True Vine 15:1 • The Resurrection and the Life 11:25

  3. Background: Imagery of the Vine • (Ps 80:8-9) “You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it. You cleared the ground for it, and it took root and filled the land.” • Israel was God’s grapevine • The “grapevine” represented Israel’s fruitfulness in doing God’s work on earth.

  4. I. God’s Great Expectations • Isaiah 5:1-4. Instead of producing sweet grapes, His people had offered only sour substitutes • Isaiah 5:7 • Jeremiah 2:21 • Isaiah talks about the future hope of Israel as a branch, a shoot: Isaiah 4:2-3; Isaiah 11:1,10-11

  5. II. Jesus is the True Vine • Jesus says He is the branch, the shoot, the choice vine that Isaiah saw coming. • Jesus takes the place of Israel as the vine of the Lord. • Jesus is the one who bears the fruit the divine Gardner is looking for. • Fruit = Bring God Glory, Obedience • John 4:34; John 6:38

  6. III. Our Responsibility • Commandment: verse 4-5 • Resolutely remain in Christ • To the extent that we become “embedded” with Christ is the degree to which we will demonstrate abundant fruitfulness and bring glory to God • Our job is not to produce fruit, only to bear it. Abiding is our obligation; fruitfulness is God’s concern.

  7. IV. A Principle to Remember • The father loves us so much and is so committed to displaying His glory, that He actively cultivates our lives. • Psalm 80:14, 18-19 • The goal is grapes…everything else must be sacrificed • God may be pruning you….but for your gain and His glory. Ps. 119;67,71

  8. Conclusion • He has formed you for fruitfulness • Deal with discipline • Prepare for pruning • Remain in Christ

  9. Sinner’s Prayer Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that I walk in darkness. And I know that I cannot save myself. I turn away from my religion, from my good works, from anything good I have ever done and from anything good I will ever do. Apart from your mercy and grace, Lord Jesus Christ, I have no hope. I do believe you are the Light of the World, God in the flesh who died on the cross for my sins. Lord Jesus, right now I believe in you and trust you and you alone for my salvation. I ask you to come into my life to be my Lord and Savior. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for taking my sins away. Amen.
