Information • One of the Seven Wonders of the world • Colossal statue of God Helios • Made by sculptor Chares of Lyndus • Commemorated the raising of Demetrius I Poliorcetes’ long siege (305 BC) of Rhodes • Was 32 meters high • Made of bronze and was reinforced by iron • Took 12 years to build (294-282 BC) • Stood beside Mandraki harbour in Rhodes • Was toppled by an earthquake (225/226 BC) • In 654 BC Arabian forces sold its pieces for scrap • Fragments totaled more than 900 camel loads

  3. Picture of statue Thus... But... • It is technically impossible that the statue could have straddled the harbour entrance, and the popular belief that it did so dates only from the Middle Ages.

  4. Interesting Facts • Its relation with the Statue of Liberty also as symbol of freedom. • There has been a debate among historians about whether the statue was standing with one foot on either side of the Rhodes’ harbour.

  5. Interesting Facts (cont.) The statue was actually built with an iron frame, and with carved and sculptured brass plates. The architect of the Colossus, Charles of Lindos, was a student of the famous sculptor Lysippus.

  6. Interesting Facts (cont.) In the 7th century A.D., the Arabs dismantled the leftovers of the destroyed Colossus, and later sold it as scrap metal. Ptolemy III, the king of Egypt, offered to pay for the Colossus’ reconstruction.
