  10. Reinforce the Positives with Affirmations • Write the name of the person on it, so Mrs. DeYoung and Miss Nissen can get it to the right person. • Do NOT use future tense. • Focus on ONLY the positive. • Be specific about the positive action/behavior. • Be serious in giving the affirmation. • Take credit for your affirmation. • This is NOT a dating service.

  11. There is a good way and a bad way to say the same thing!

  12. Example • Bad affirmation: Joe, I liked your presentation on J.K. Rowling, but maybe you could pick someone else next time because she’s my favorite author. ~ Jamie • Good affirmation: Joe, I thought the example of plagiarism you shared about J.K. Rowling was really interesting. Thanks for sharing. ~ Jamie

  13. Which one is better? • Nancy, I really liked how well-written your research paper was. It was easy to understand and follow along. ~ James • Nancy, I think you could be a famous writer some day. ~ James

  14. Which one is better? • Kurt, Go Cubs! ~ Alan • Kurt, you did a great job working with your teammates at the football game Friday. ~ Alan

  15. Practice • Bad affirmation: Your hair really looked nice today.

  16. Practice • Write one affirmation to someone in the room and turn it in for Mrs. DeYoung and Miss Nissen to review.

  17. Affirmation Procedure • Get a card from the bucket, and write your affirmation on it. • Turn the card into the shelf where you turn in your assignments. • Mrs. DeYoung and Miss Nissen will review the affirmation and put it in the appropriate envelope. If the affirmation needs corrections, she will return to sender to correct. • Fridays, Mrs. DeYoung and Miss Nissen will deliver the envelopes. You can review or take your affirmations, but the envelopes go back to Mrs. DeYoung and Miss Nissen until the end of the term.

  18. Affirmation Reactions • All you should say is “Thank You”. • What if you deny what they are saying is true? • S: I was really impressed by how detailed your narrative paper was. I could picture everything in my head. • R: It wasn’t that good. I just whipped something up and I only got a B on it anyway.

  19. Affirmation Reactions • What if you critique their affirmations? • S: I thought you did a great job presenting your speach for Mrs. Frideres. You seemed really confident and well-prepared. • R: Thanks for the card, but you spelled speech wrong.

  20. Affirmation Reactions • What if you say more than “thank you”? • S: Your positive attitude makes class so enjoyable. • R: Thanks, I always try to be positive. I can remember when I was 4, no. Maybe it was 5. Let me think. Yeah, when I was 5, I had this crush on Miss Frizzle from The Magic School Bus. I just loved how she was always so peppy and took the kids on all those adventures. I . . .
