1. Entry Exercise • In Genesis, we see Adam and Eve facing temptation and giving in, but critics have expressed the notion that there are more temptations in today’s society to sway people from living a moral life. Do you believe there were more temptations in Biblical times or in modern times? Which temptations do you believe are harder to resist? Why?

3. Allusions • An allusion is a reference to a concept, person, thing, or event. The allusion is often indirect and can come from any number of sources such as literature, history, religion, myths and legends, or popular culture. When an author or speaker alludes to something, he or she assumes that the reader or listener will recognize the reference and will be familiar with the source. In rare circumstances, an allusion may be intended for a select group and not every reader will understand the reference.

Allegory • a work (poem, play, picture, etc.), in which the apparent meaning of the characters and events is used to symbolize a deeper moral or spiritual meaning • the technique or genre that this represents • use of such symbolism to illustrate truth or a moral • anything used as a symbol or emblem

7. Genesis Chapter 3 • What does the voice of the devil look like? How has this influenced Western culture? • What kind of fruit grew on the forbidden tree? There is no mention of an apple, but this could have been derived from the fact that St. Jerome used the word malum to describe the fruit. This actually means both “evil” and “apple”. In Jewish tradition, however, the fruit is often associated with a date or spray of wheat.
