  4. Motivation: Vandalism • Common target: Educational Buildings • Typically multiple impulsive offenders • Disorganized Crime Scenes (Evidence!)

  5. Motivation: Vandalism • Offender: • Poorly educated juvenile male • Disruptive in school • Live close to fire scene, set fire and leave

  6. Motivation: Excitement • Offender likes fire-related excitement • Offender often observes fire or aftermath (Unique – not true for all motivations) • Targets often close to outdoor hangouts

  7. Motivation: Excitement • Offender: • Unemployed middle-class male • Socially inadequate • Alcohol/Drugs may be common • Serial offenders are common

  8. Motivation: Revenge • Precipitating Events: Can be years prior • Targets: Residences and Vehicles • Usually starts fire in area of significance

  9. Motivation: Revenge • Offender: • Blue collar or lower class • Lives in rental property • History of unstable relationships • Alcohol typically involved

  10. Motivation: Crime Concealment • Purpose of covering up criminal activity • Offender: • History of arrests and history of drugs/alcohol • Highly mobile

  11. Motivation: Profit • Commercial Enterprise; Least Passion • Well-Planned and Organized • No Forced Entry/Use Incendiary Materials • Items of Value Often Removed

  12. Motivation: Extremist • Offender: • Often easily identified through interviews • Previous police contact (esp. trespassing, mischief, etc.)
