  8. Local Food Supply • Affected by: • **climate and geography • Coast = seafood • Fruit = tropical countries

  9. Commerce • Foods produced in one place can become part of a cuisine somewhere else • Bananas = Malaysia, now grown in Central America and shipped to U.S.

  10. Immigration and Travel • People move to a new place • Bring in familiar food • Brings them comfort

  11. Foods in North America • Native Americans helped European settler survive by teaching about local foods • **turkey, squash, pumpkin, lima beans, corn, cranberries

  16. Exploring World of food • Try food at regional or ethnic festivals • Traveling = experiment with local foods • Look for regional foods at local markets • Eat at an ethnic restaurant

  19. Summary • Cuisine and food customs differ from region to region, yet are interconnected • American cuisine has developed from many cultures • Each region of the U.S. has foods special to that area • Eating a variety of foods from different cultures can add flavor and nutrition to your meal

  20. Activity • Corn is an American original • Most important crop in the U.S. • Find 2 recipes featuring corn or corn meal

  21. Celebration Meals • Choose a type of celebration, such as birthday, wedding, or national holiday. List as many examples as you can of foods you associate with this celebration. Explain the ways in which you think food contributes to the celebration of the event.
