  15. Signs of damaged pulp: • Pain • Prolonged sensitivity to heat, cold or biting • Discoloration of the tooth • Swelling and tenderness in the gums

  16. Sometimes there areno symptoms. Some endodontic problems are only evident on an x-ray...

  17. …so it’s important to seeyour general dentistat least once a year.

  18. If you are experiencing symptoms, it is important to see your dentist.

  19. During your visit at our office, the following steps are taken:

  20. Preparation for Treatment • Tooth is examined • X-rays are taken • Anesthetic is given • Dental dam is placed

  21. A dental dam is a small sheetof rubber that surroundsthe tooth. It will isolate your tooth and keep it clean during the procedure.

  22. Once your toothis completely numb...

  23. …I will makean opening in the crown... Access Opening

  24. I will use a microscope to more clearly see down inside the tooth. This allows for a much more efficient and through cleaning

  25. …then gently clean the pulp from the pulp chamber... Access Opening Cleaned and Shaped Pulp Chamber

  26. ...and canals inside the roots. Access Opening Cleaned and Shaped Pulp Chamber and Root Canal

  27. To clean in the canals I use very small, thin instruments called FILES. The files look like a small thin wire… it simply has file edges along the outside

  28. The first ones used are 10/100th of a millimeter. That is 1/254th of an inch!! So small they may occasionally separate or break within the tooth. This rarely causes a problem.

  29. IF a file were to break, they are so fine, they are often sealed within the canal. It is not a cause for concern. I will certainly advise you, if any difficulties occur during the procedure..

  30. Once the root canals are cleaned and shaped and disinfected...

  31. …I willfill the canals... Filled Root Canals

  32. …with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Filled Root Canals

  33. Temporary SEAL We will finish today by placing a temporary seal (nota filling). Filled Root Canals

  34. Temporary Seal This seal is designed to last 2 to 4 weeks. Filled Root Canals

  35. Temporary Seal With a Temporary Seal, You are NOT finished with your care! Filled Root Canals

  38. Core build up …a large filling, called a core build up, is necessary. Filled Root Canals Gutta-percha

  39. Core build up If your tooth lacks sufficient structure to hold this filling... Filled Root Canals

  40. Core build up Post …a post may also be placed inside the tooth. Filled Root Canals Gutta-percha

  41. The purpose of the post is to help retainthe corebuild up. Post

  42. Final Restoration At this time, a crown must be placed, to protect your tooth Gutta-percha

  43. Until the final restoration is placed, your tooth will be susceptible to splitting or breaking...

  44. …if you split or fracture the tooth … It must then be extracted (removed) …if you split or fracture the tooth … It must then be extracted (removed)

  45. To protect your tooth from biting pressure and to speed healing, I will shave down the top of your tooth.

  46. Your tooth may remain sensitive for a few days following treatment. Over-the-counter medications (Tylenol, Motrin etc) should relieve this discomfort.

  47. For lower teeth, your gums may be inflamed for several days You will be given specific instructions on a salt water mouth rinse

  48. If pain is severeor swelling occurs, call our office.
