  2. Basic Facts • Leader of Soviet Union • “Stalin” means “Man of Steel” • Introduced Five Year Plans. These “helped” industry in Russia.

  3. Birth • He was born December 21, 1879. • He was born in Gori, Russia. • His birth name was IosifVissarionovichDjugashvili (Iosif translates to Joseph in English) • Smallpox when he was six. Scarred face • His mother was a peasant and his father was a cobbler. Both were illiterate.

  4. Childhood/Education • Beat by father( drunken man). Early inspiration of vengeful feeling towards people who tried to wield power over him • Nine years old went to religious school. • He was a bright student. • Received scholarship at religious seminary at Tbilisi (in Georgian Republic) • Turned to Marxism after going to seminary • Went to Orthodox church.

  5. After Childhood • Arrested eight times. Escaped seven times. • Adopted “Stalin” while in prison • Stalin joined a group who supported Karl Marx • Became active revolutionist • Stalin joined a group who supported Karl Marx.

  6. Bolshevik Revolution • Started after WWI • Invaded and took over the Russian Government • Lenin was made Government leader • Rose to power during Bolshevik revolution. After Lenin’s death he betrayed his kind. By 1929 he became a dictator.

  7. In Power Actions • Killed people who he thought could possibly threaten his power including his old Bolshevik associates. • Did not want socialism • He wanted to end private farming. • Responsible for 40 million deaths and murdered 20 million of those.
