  1. Literature: Tuesday, March 19, 2013 Handouts: * None Homework: * Read AR book 20 - 30 minutes daily & record progress * In-class assignment—Read &analyze one of the following:1) “In the Fog,” Lit book p. 74 – 84 2) “The Hitchhiker,” Lit book p. 86 – 103 You will have follow-up questions in the Lit book on Wed. Assignments Due: * In-class assignment— You should have begun reading one of the two plays named above.

  2. Today’s Goal: Finish reading one of two play selections today (Lit book pp. 74 – 84 or Lit book pp. 86 – 103). Outcomes: Use clues from stage directions to imagine the action taking place in a play. Define the term “flashback” and describe two different ways it can be used in literature. Make inferences about what characters may be thinking and feeling. Make inferences about conflicts in the story. Continually predict what you think will happen. Analyze a play to identify elements of suspense (anything in the play that built suspense). Give “voice” to characters by dramatically reading their lines.

  3. Starter #1: Yesterday each one of you selected one of the following two plays and began reading it independently in class. Today you will finish reading the play you selected: Choice #1—In the Fog (pp.74 – 85) This play is meant to be performed on stage. Choice #2—The Hitchhiker (pp. 86 – 103) This one is a radio play. The setting is during the 1940s, which is also the time when radio drama was most popular. I suggest you preview each story, make predictions on what you think is going to happen in each story, then select one of them and start reading. You have today and tomorrow to finish it. On Wednesday you will be given an in-class assignment related to the play you selected.

  4. Starter #2: Remember to read not only the character’s lines, but also the stage directions and explanations contained in the brackets. Try to imagine the characters and the action taking place. When you finish reading the play, ask yourself, “If I were asked to take the role of one of those characters, which one would I like to be?” We won’t act out the play, but at some point, we will read aloud the parts, and through your dramatic reading, you will bring life to these characters. If you finish early, you may want to start reading the other play, just to see what it’s about. . . .
