Didactics - includes courses in physiatric therapeutics, anatomy and kinesiology, EMG, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, pediatric rehabilitation and more Continuing Medical Education Lectures Journal Club Anatomy Course - 12-week anatomy course which involves cadaver dissection of the back and limbs, is given February through April every other year. EMG Course – 8 week EMG course given from February to April given every other year. Community Events- Living Without Limitations Camp Retreat, TBI Awareness Day, Stroke Awareness Day, and Geriatric Awareness Day National and In-service Examinations - National and in-service (course) examinations are administered and subsequently used as teaching tools in round-table review Self Assessment Exam (SAE) Electrodiagnostic Self Assessment Exam (EMG SAE) Educational Conferences – both locally and nationally Academic Curriculum Whether the resident's focus is clinical practice, academic medicine or research, all of the following opportunities are available in the WSU/DMC program. Didactics The didactic series is presented in a 1 1/2 - year cycle, thus exposing every resident to the series twice. The didactic series includes the major topic areas pertinent to PM&R, as identified in major textbooks and in the study guide of the AAPM&R. The schedule includes courses in physiatric therapeutics, anatomy and kinesiology, EMG, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, pediatric rehabilitation and more. Continuing Medical Education Department or visiting faculty present PM&R topics of interest on a weekly basis. This forum is also used for case discussion and interesting electromyography (EMG) conferences. Grand Rounds Weekly grand rounds include professor rounds with leading physiatrists, as well as, resident case presentations. Generally, the issues may center around a patient with a common but important clinical issue or a patient with an unusual problem. Presentations may be supported via literature searches, audio visual and handout materials. Journal Club Through critical review of articles and the input and expertise of attending physiatrists, the Journal Club helps stimulate independent thought and the penchant for life long learning. The series enables participants to become superior consumers of research by encouraging familiarity with current PM&R literature, and providing an opportunity to critique study design and implementation as it relates to PM&R research. Anatomy A 12-week anatomy course which involves cadaver disection of the back and limbs, is given January through April to PGYII residents. Visiting Professors As part of the yearly Benard L. Mass Visiting Professor Lectureship, a nationally renowned specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation or a related field, dedicates one evening and one morning to intensive teaching and patient presentation. National and In-service Examinations National and in-service (course) examinations are administered and subsequently used as teaching tools in round-table review. Educational Conferences Residents have full access to educational conferences offered by Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan. Several are held each year at Detroit-area hotels for a national audience of rehabilitation professionals.
