  11. Pick up an application TONIGHT for our FREE SAT PREP CLASS. This is an online College Board class that uses their Khan Academy material, and it’s excellent. Sign up to attend the class held in the Library. Choose Tuesdays or Thursdays, 3:45 to 5:00. Classes will begin the last week of September (Tuesday, 9/25 & Thursday, 9/27). Every Senior will be taking the SAT on Wednesday, October 10 – on a school day – and the exam will be FREE for all. We will have two full-length Saturday exams before October 10 to help you prepare. UC Personal Insight Questions • Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time. • Every person has a creative side,, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side. • What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time? • Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced. • Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement? • Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom. • What have you done to make your school or your community a better place? • Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you stand out as a strong candidate for admission to the University of California?

  16. * Pick up a Recommendation Request Packet and follow directions and request submission deadline: October 31! * Do your research . Requirements and deadlines vary. * Many colleges (700+) use the Common App, which links to Naviance. * Most require Letters of Recommendation from Counselor and Teacher(s) * Most require Personal Statements * Some require Supplemental Essays. Complete your application before the deadline – most between December 15 – January 30. Private Colleges/Universities

  17. Begin by comparing six main points: • *Academic Programs: • Do they have what you’re interested in studying? How strong is the program? • Location • School Size • Setting (Rural, Suburban or Urban) • Living Conditions (Dorms, Apartments) • Athletic Programs, Other Facilities (Pool, Performing Arts Center) • DO NOT MAKE COST A FACTOR IN YOUR INITIAL SEARCH. • SEE WHAT THEY OFFER IN TERMS OF FINANCIAL AID.   18. GPA Form All Financial Aid begins with FAFSA – for U.S. Citizens, or California DREAM App – for AB 540 Students. Application Window: October 1, 2018 - March 2, 2019 Cal Grants: GPA Verification (submitted by BCCHS) CSS PROFILE- More detailed financial info sometimes required by privates. Individual Scholarships- Search Naviance and College Websites. What You Need To Do:

  19. This year, EVERY BCCHS STUDENT will be creating a Raise.Meaccount! Raise.Meis a Scholarship Program started by the Gates Foundation, with about 200 member colleges that have agreed to award MICRO-SCHOLARSHIPSfor achievements by students in grades 9 thru 12. Students will be completing a portfolio that lists all of the achievements that earn $$$. Then, list all of the colleges you’re applying to. If any of those are Raise.Me schools and you attend one of those colleges, you will be awarded scholarships in the amount you’ve earned! SomeRaise.Me schools: Syracuse, Claremont Colleges, Cal Poly SLO, Univ. of San Diego, Arizona State, Stanford Raise.Me!
