  1. Beavers Roman Soldiernight

  2. You will need: • Lots of cardboard: • Large rectangles for shields, plus lots extra • Paint • Lots of Al foil • Split pins, sellotape, staplers • Small disposable bowls

  3. Make a shield and sword

  4. Making the sword Staple or sellotape two cardboard sword templates together. Add Aluminium foil to blade, and base of handle. Leave handle undecorated, or draw lines to represent leather strapping.

  5. Making the Shield Take shield in colour of lodge. Add foil to bowl and card square to create boss. Attach to middle of shield using split pins. Attach handle on back.

  6. Testudo Formation Testudo is latin for Tortoise

  7. Similar technique still in use today

  9. Testudo Formation Each lodge to approach a ‘castle‘ of upturned tables in formation, and withstand attack from another lodge in form of balls of paper
