  2. Agenda • Introduce FLL • Roles of coaches and mentors • Cost • Forming or registering a team • Where to begin?

  3. What’s FLL (FIRST LEGO League)? • FIRST • For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology • Build a robot using LEGO Mindstorms kit • Kids age 9 to 14 • No more than 10 members per team

  4. FLL Contd. • Goal • Expose kids to science & technology in a fun, hands-on way • Learn problem solving in a team environment • Annual Challenge • Robot design • Robot challenge • Research & Presentation • Teamwork

  5. FLL Coaching Facilitate rather than lead Foster good teamwork Provide thought provoking mini-challenges Run by team’s parents Familiarize and learn the equipment Someone on the team must have a lap top computer

  6. Coaching Ethics • All work done by the members of the team • Coach’s role is to: • Challenge • Question • Stimulate • Encourage team work • Not solve / Build / Program

  7. Mentors • Mrs. Chien can help with basic programming and operation • Experienced members can offer class • There are NXT programming books • Look for experts with engineering and programming backgrounds

  8. Cost per team • Team registration $200 + tax and shipping • Field setup kit $65 + tax and shipping • Challenge table w/o saw horse $70 (can borrow or build) • Extra wheels and light sensors ( divided among all members). Let me know what to order

  9. Cost Contd. • Tournament application fee $50-$100 per event ( 3 tiers) • Team T-shirts and project display materials $20 (optional)

  10. You must have your parent’s permission before joining. • Make sure you are available at the time your team meets up. • Once joined, there is no refund.

  11. FLL Schedule • Team Registration : fills up by mid-September • Each coach registers on https://gofll.usfirst.org/ • Three tiers of tournaments this year regional qualifying state • Regional Tournament : Nov 21, Sunday at Fallon ---- Need to sign up separately • Competition is against the challenge, not against the other teams

  12. FLL Meetings • Team Coaching and Practice Sessions • Start in September to go till November • Suggest meeting twice a week ( one for research, and one for challenge game) • Team decides the meeting time and place

  13. What to do this week? • Coaches register your team • Build team spirits • Attend kickoff meeting at Google on Sep 3

  14. What we can do next week • New coaches need to download Mindstorm programming software • Basic lessons for newcomers • Teams can start doing research and plan calendar • Mrs. Chien will announce meetings on http://new.schoolnotes.com/chien
