  1. Group Discussion – Education and International Collaboration Chairs: B. F. Spencer, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental EngineeringUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign SatishNagarajaiah Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Rice University Recorder:Yong Xia Department of Civil and Structural EngineeringThe Hong Kong Polytechnic University Number of participants in group discussion: 20~ Asian-Pacific Network of Centers for Research in Smart Structure Technology (ANCRiSST) Dalian, China July 25-26, 2011

  2. 1. International test-beds of SHM and Control • The test-beds allow different researchers test their own algorithms on a common platform. • The Guangzhou New TV Tower • The 600 m tall Guangzhou New TV Tower, located at Guangzhou, PRC, has been equipped with a sophisticated SHM and vibration control systems. • The long-term SHM system consists of about 800 sensors of 16 types. Information of the SHM, reduced FEM, and field measurement of acceleration data are available at website: http://www.cse.polyu.edu.hk/benchmark/index.htm. • The vibration control system consists of a hybrid control system at the primary structure and TMDs at the antenna mast. two tuned mass dampers coupled with two active mass dampers will be installed at the floor of 438m height for mitigating wind-induced vibration of the primary structure, while two tuned mass dampers will be suspended at the heights of 571 and 575m, respectively, for vibration suppression of the antenna mast. • A competition was suggested. Winners may apply their algorithms to the real structure.

  3. 1. International test-beds of SHM and Control • The Aizhai Suspension Bridge • The bridge has a 1176 m main span, 350 m above valley. • It is about 1.5 hours away from Zhang-jia-jie Airport or 5 hours from Changsha. • 115 sensors, including GPS stations, accelerometers, FBG sensors, anemometers and weather stations, have been installed on the bridge. • An FEM is available. • Implementation • Two stages approach: first, development of analytical algorithms; second, application to the test-beds. • Special sessions will be organized in the international conferences in due course. • Results will be published in special issues of selected journals.

  4. 2. Textbooks on smart materials and structures • Lecture notes of previous summer school can be downloaded from APSS website. • Experts in various areas will be invited to contribute chapters. • A special session/meeting will be called in the next workshop on writing textbooks. • Prof. CB Yun from KAIST is nominated to lead the exercise.

  5. 3. Short course/international online courses • Short courses • Two one-day short courses can be organized in parallel at ANCRiSST workshops. • Every center will contribute to the courses. • Online courses • online learning has become more and more popular; • open to all audience; • Remote participants may join the online courses using SKYPE.

  6. 4. Student exchange program • Establish a student exchange program among ANCRiSST centers. • Financial support can be sought from government. • Collaboration has been established between some centers.
