  2. About the Teacher • I have been teaching for twelve years. I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd grades and even preschool! • I graduated from Jacksonville State University with Bachelors in Education. I completed my Master’s degree in Reading in Literacy from Walden University in 2006.

  3. Reading Workshop 8:45-9:45 Reading WorkshopIn second grade we move from learning how to read to learning how to learn. We focus on strategies of comprehension. Whole Group Lesson Focus Spelling/Phonics Grammar Reading and Vocabulary Reading Workshop Focus Make Connections, Question, Prior Knowledge (Schema), Visualize, Infer, Summarize, Synthesis Center Rotations (Daily Five): Read to Self Read with a Partner Listen to Reading Writing Spelling/Word Work Working with Guided Reading Groups Guided Reading Students meet in small groups with others at the same instructional reading level to work on strategies to boost comprehension, fluency, and work on strategies to become better readers.

  4. Math 10:45-11:30 • We will follow the Georgia Frameworks. These units are created by the state department for all Georgia schools to follow. • We will be doing lots of hands-on learning and performance tasks. • Small Groups, Partners, Leveled Math Centers, Hands-On Games, Math Journal, Computers • Standards for Qtr. 1: Place Value and Fluency with Addition and Subtraction

  5. Lunch/Recess 11:40-12:10 • Parents are more than welcome to come and eat with your child. We eat at 11:40 • Birthdays: Parents are welcome to send in/bring a treat to share with the class during lunch on your child’s birthday. • Treats must be pre-wrapped or store bought. • Please email me 1-2 days in advance if you are bringing in a birthday treat. • Please remember we have several students with peanut and egg allergies in the class.

  6. Spelling • EVERYweek we will have spelling words Students will need to complete three or four spelling activities each week. (www.spellingcity.com). • Additional spelling activities may also be completed. (See Spelling Activity Sheet). • All spelling activities must be turned in on Friday. • Words Their Way: Focus will be on spelling rules and patterns. • Differentiated

Writer's Workshop 10:00-10:45 Focus on the 6 Traits of Writing: Ideas, Sentence Fluency, Organization, Word Choice, Voice, and Conventions Genres of Focus: Narrative, Response to Literature, Informational, & Persuasive Writing Grammar: Types of Sentences, Parts of Sentences, Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives

  8. Science Life Cycles Matter Astronomy Forces and Motion *Project Based Learning if possible *Incorporated in reading group lessons and read-aloud text throughout the week.

  9. Social Studies • Georgia Geography • Elected officials and • landmarks (state and • national) • Native American cultures • of Georgia (Creek and Cherokee) • Economics of Georgia – Supply and Demand • Famous Georgians and their contributions

  10. Homework • Read daily-Listen to your child read and read to your child. Let this a special time of making memories. 15 minutes a night is encouraged. • Study for spelling test using Spellingcity.com or activities listed on my website. • Math/Grammar/Science/Social Studies assignments will be written in your child’s agenda. • These assignments need to be returned • the next day. • Please check your child’s agenda daily .
