Shannon TrustThe Work we do The Shannon Trust Reading Plan (Toe by Toe) A peer led programme where prisoners who can read teach prisoners with poor reading skills, using the Toe by Toe reading manual 1 The Reading Plan runs 160 prisons & secure establishments in the UK 3 A team of 160 volunteers and 250 staff deliver The Reading Plan 4 Shannon Trust provdides resources and volunteer support to deliver the Reading Plan in individual prisons 2 In 2010 approximately 6,000 learners and 1,500 peer mentors engaged in the Reading Plan 5

Shannon TrustOur Objectives To engage every non-reading prisoner early in their sentence To support prison staff run The Reading Plan in every prison & young offenders’ institution To promote the benefits of peer mentoring – engaging the disengaged To help breakdown the barriers that prevent people in prison from learning Irish Prison Service To deliver a national pilot that proves the benefits of the Reading Plan and supports further development

The Impact of Toe by Toe Learners & Mentors Feedback Learners Mentors
The Impact on Reading Age Initial Feedback When Toe by Toe is delivered for: 20 minutes a day Five days a week Reading Ages increase by an average of 1 year for every month

The IPS Pilot • Reading Plan pilot commenced in September 2010 • Pilot supported by two volunteers from Shannon Trust • Pilot is active in five prisons: Limerick, Shelton Abbey, Midlands, Wheatfields and Mountjoy • Working with Education Departments to facilitate the Reading Plan • Progress reports submitted to HQs • Recognition of the Reading Plan in the Prison Service News - 08/2011 Shannon Trust • HQ management very supportive of • Governors and SMTs meetings with Shannon Trust representatives • Prison Service staff recognise and embrace the benefits of peer mentored reading support • Prisoners embracing the concept of “by prisoners for prisoners” • Success is breeding success The Irish prison Service
