  2. Obesity in America is on a steady rise • In 2010 there were was not one state with less than 20% of its population being obese. • More than one-third of adults are obese • In the past 20 years, the obesity rates doubled for adults • Eventually obesity will be the new normal.

  3. Studies show that in another 20 years that more than half of the population in Texas will be obese.

  4. Increased risk of Diseases • There is a strong connection between obesity and diabetes. • High blood pressure • Respiratory problems. • Possibly cause problems with your posture. • Lack of energy. • Could decrease life expectancy.

  5. Childhood Obesity • One sixth of children in America are obese. • The obesity rates for children have tripled in the past 20 years. • A child who is obese is likely to be obese when they are an adult which means they will be at risk for heart problems. • Make your child understand the importance of eating right and exercising on a regular basis properly. • Healthy lifestyle habits. Healthy Diet. • Take them off the video games, get them active.

  6. What can be done about this problem? • Get fit! • Best way to get in better shape is to have a mixture of a good diet and regular exercising. • Start off by finding your BMI (Body Mass Index). • You can use a diet book to help you find out what to eat right. • You have to exercise to help with the weight loss and to keep the weight off.

  7. How to find out your BMI • BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. • There are plenty of sites that provide a way to find out your BMI. • All you have to do is put your height and weight and you’ll get it. • You can use the website that I’ve made to find links for your BMI.

  8. Some Diet Books, and Supplements • There are many different types of diet books depending on what you’re aiming for. • “365 Ways To Get Out The Fat” by the American Heart Association is a flexible diet book that has a tip on how to lose weight each day. • “Gaining weight 101” by Lou Diamond and “Bring It” help out with how to burn fat and gain muscle. • Diet pills and supplements should be taken with caution and if recommended by your doctor.

  9. Food Diary • Keeping a record of what you eat daily can help you stay on the track you need to be when you’re trying to lose weight or maintain that weight. • If you’re seeing a specialist, it could also help them to see if your making progress. • It’s like making a budget for money spending.

  10. What I have done • I have started a group called “The Neighborhood Fitness” where locals can get together to encourage each other to keep striving to be healthy. • I have also began making my own website about the group. • What I hope to do is help my local residents be healthier and to get to know each other better. • Website: http://www.wix.com/priscilianoc/getfit
