ASHTANG AYURVEDA, OR THE EIGHT BRANCHES OF AYURVEDA, IS A COLLECTION OF EIGHT MAJOR DISCIPLINES IN AYURVEDA: Many of us limit our understanding of Ayurveda to herbal remedies and warm oil massages. However, the science of Ayurveda has an astoundingly detailed scope of looking at a person’s total health, including everything from internal medicine to paediatrics to geriatrics, rejuvenation, surgery, and even sexual health.

  3. KAYA CHIKITSA (INTERNAL MEDICINE) 1 The term ‘Kaya’ stands for ‘Agni,’ or the digestive fire in the body. An imbalance in the Agni principle causes many ailments. Kaya Chikitsa is a discipline that treats common problems like fever, diarrhoea, cough, skin disorders, lung diseases, and bone disorders by rebalancing Agni.

  4. BAALA CHIKITSA (PEDIATRICS) 2 Baala Chikitsa, also known as Kaumarbhritya, may be traced back to a sage named Maricha Kashyapa, a pioneer of the Ayurvedic school of paediatrics. His apprentice Vriddha Jivaka assisted in documenting and encoding his master’s knowledge of paediatrics in the well-known work Kashyapa Samhita.

  5. GRAHA CHIKITSA (PSYCHOLOGY) 3 Graha Chikitsa is the Ayurvedic psychic area that deals with diseases and disorders of the mind and ailments with psychosomatic foundations. Mental health problems cause psychosomatic disorders that do not have observable symptoms. This section discusses herbs and their uses as disinfectants and their ability to instil optimism into the environment.

  6. URDHVAANGA OR SHALAKYA CHIKITSA (EENT) 4 If you enjoy Ayurveda as much as we do, you’ve probably heard of or tried therapies like Netradhara, Karnapoornam, Gandoosham, or Shirolepa. You may not realize that these therapies are part of science known as Shalakya Chikitsa.

  7. SHALYA CHIKITSA (SURGERY) 5 Shalya Tantra describes pre-operative procedures, post-operative procedures, general procedures, energy points (marmas), and even anaesthetic techniques, as well as the appropriate equipment, bandages, or sutures.

  8. DAMSTRA CHIKITSA (TOXICOLOGY) 6 Damstra Chikitsa, also known as Agada Tantra, is an Ayurvedic toxicology branch that treats and prevents poisons in the body.

  9. RASAYAN/JARA CHIKITSA (GERIATRICS & REJUVENATION) 7 This Ayurvedic branch focuses on diseases and disorders associated with ageing and the science of longevity and regeneration. It focuses on preventative healthcare, recommendations, therapies, and herbal medicines (Rasayana) to improve quality of life and lead a healthy, happy, and vibrant life.

  10. VRSHA OR VAJIKARAṆA CHIKITSA (APHRODISIAC THERAPY) 8 This section is concerned with promoting men’s and women’s sexual health and fertility enhancement. It is concerned with the health and diseases of reproductive or genetic organs.
