  2. Where did QCAR come from? It is a Queensland Studies Authority curriculum reform. Initiated by the Department of Education Training and the Arts and supported through development by Education Queensland, Queensland Catholic Education Commission and Independent Schools Queensland. • DETA Minister • QSA • QCAR team • Partner, Trial and Project Schools • All Sectors (EQ, ISQ, QCEC)

QCAR in a national curriculum context • High Quality, High Equity, Low Definition (Luke, Weir and Woods http://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/downloads/syllabus/syll_principles_dev_report.pdf • QSA states that Queensland's Essential Learning and Standards align with the national agenda because they provide: • Informed Prescription (a description of what is essential in all programs) • Informed Professionalism (resources that support teacher development, quality assessment practices and contextualised curriculum delivery and pedagogy)

National Curriculum • The National Curriculum Board has released the Shape of the Australian Curriculum papers in English, Maths, Science and History. • Moving to the independent statutory authority Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) in Sydney. • National standards models are now being developed http://search.curriculum.edu.au/texis/search?pr=www.ncb.org.au&dropXSL=html&query=standards • Documents for the first for areas will be available for schools mid 2010 for implementation in 2011.

  7. Learning and Assessment Focus Describes the focus of learning and assessment within the year-level juncture. Ways of working Describes the essential processes that students use to develop and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding. Knowledge and understanding Describes essential concepts, facts and procedures of the KLA.

A planning model from QCAR APEL (Auditing And Planning with the Essential Learnings) http://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/apel.html Select the Essential Learnings, school priorities and context for learning. Plan learning experiences and teaching strategies to respond to the needs and interests of the learner. Plan a variety of assessments to collect comprehensive and meaningful evidence of learning. Consider how judgments will be made about the quality of learning using the evidence in student responses. Consider how and when to provide feedback. Identify curriculum Sequence learning Develop assessment Make judgments Use feedback

Key messages for schools • Alignmentis ensuring the assessment purpose is clear and related to the learning experiences and consistent approaches are used assess and reflect. • Good Assessmentimproves learning outcomes. Schools are encouraged to use a variety of modes (oral, written, individual, group), summative and formative, standardised and performance based approaches. • Standards and assessment in the middle years primarily should be used to improve learning through quality feedback. • Moderation - Standards/Evidence/Agreement, developing consistent approaches to standards in years 1-9 is a school responsibility. • CIAU - Credibility, Intellectual Depth, Authenticity, User Friendliness, developing comparability expectations and rigor in our assessment practices.
