What is a Graphic Organizer • Pictorial or graphical way to organize information and thoughts • Powerful tool that can be used to enhance learning and create a foundation for learning
The Look ofGraphic Organization A Descriptive or Thematic Mapworks well for mapping generic information, but particularly well for mapping hierarchical relationships Organizing a hierarchical set of information, reflecting super ordinate or subordinate elements, is made easier by constructing a Network Tree.
When the information relating to a main idea or theme does not fit into a hierarchy, a Spider Mapcan help with organization. When information contains cause and effect problems and solutions, a Problem and Solution Mapcan be useful for organizing.
A Problem-Solution Outlinehelps students to compare different solutions to a problem A Sequential Episodic Map is useful for mapping cause and effect.
When cause-effect relationships are complex and non-redundant a Fishbone Mapmay be particularly useful. A Comparative and Contrastive Mapcan help students to compare and contrast two concepts according to their features.
Another way to compare concepts' attributes is to construct a Compare-Contrast Matrix. Continuum Scaleis effective for organizing information along a dimension such as less to more, low to high, and few to many. A Series of Events Chaincan help students organize information according to various steps or stages.
A Cycle Mapis useful for organizing information that is circular or cyclical, with no absolute beginning or ending. A Human Interaction Outline is effective for organizing events in terms of a chain of action and reaction (especially useful in social sciences and humanities).
Dual Coding Theory • Allan Paivio • Concrete words can be encoded twice. Once as verbal symbols (text) and once as images. • Dual coding increases the likelihood of recall. The dual retrieval routes—one for each code. • Verbal symbols are stored as linear sequence of words, visual as pictures. apple
Why use graphic organizers? • The human brain naturally looks for connections between old and new information. Additionally, studies have shown that the brain processes information most efficiently in chunks. Graphic organizers complement both of these processes by helping students. • When students see information in a web diagram or concept map, their minds begin to see patterns and relationships among ideas. • Helps teachers understand what students are learning.

Critical Areas of Thought • All representations should not be the same. • Students need ‘thinking’ and ‘creating’ time. • Presentation and sharing is important. Students will make connections. • Give time to revisit graphic representation. ----Cement learning
