Upgrade 1 - Unit 5 Grammar Reference: Past Continuous, Possessive Adjectives and Possessive Pronouns
I broke my arm when I was skiing. I was taking a shower when the phone rang. I lost my earrings when I was surfing.
All the previous sentences are in the PAST CONTINUOUS. We use it to talk about an action or event that was happening around a particular time in the past. We often use the PAST CONTINUOUS and the SIMPLE PAST together. Check the example in the next slide:
I broke my arm when I was skiing. a c c i d e n t skiing PAST PRESENT FUTURE
AFFIRMATIVE FORM WAS skiing. I YOU WERE WAS SHE IT HE WE WERE YOU THEY
NEGATIVE FORM not WAS I skiing. YOU WERE WAS SHE IT HE WE WERE YOU THEY
INTERROGATIVE FORM WAS I skiing? WERE YOU SHE IT HE WAS WERE WE YOU THEY
In this way, the PAST CONTINUOUS is used to say that a person was in the middle of a progressive action in a certain time in the past. I was taking a shower when the phone rang. I started taking I was taking I finished taking PAST PRESENT
And you? What were you doing this time yesterday? What were you doing before this class? What were you doing before you went to bed yesterday?
