  1. ADVANCE Adult Large/Giant Breed is a complete & balanced diet specifically formulated for large and giant breed dogs, 25kg or over

  2. Key benefits of ADVANCE Adult Large/Giant Breed: 1. Contains Green Lipped Mussel powder for improved Joint Health 2. Kibble size and shape reduces the risk of gastric dilation (bloat) 3. Formulated to help maintain Heart Muscle function

  3. WHY IS JOINT HEALTH SO IMPORTANT FOR LARGE/GIANT BREED DOGS? • What is Cartilage and what is its role in Joint Health? • Cartilage is dense connective tissue that lines the surface of • joints. Its two main functions are: • It provides a slippery coating, which cushions the bone and aids in reducing friction when the bones slide over each other • 2. It acts as a shock absorber CARTILAGE SYNOVIAL FLUID BONE HEALTHY JOINT

  4. Osteoarthritis • When cartilage becomes eroded and exposed bones start to rub against each other, it causes inflammation which is known as Osteoarthritis. • This leads to swelling of the joint cavity, which results in reduced movement • and pain. • An important thing to remember is that Osteoarthritis is not only a condition • of older animals. • Some breeds are predisposed to • conditions that can lead to arthritis • High activity levels can lead to premature • wear and tear of the joint cartilage • Large breeds and over weight dogs put more • stress on their joints due to their weight

  5. Product Feature: Stabilised Green Lipped Mussel Powder • The unique benefit of the inclusion of Green Lipped Mussel Powder in ADVANCE is that it’s not only a rich source of glucosamine. • It’s a nourishing cocktail of nutrients that work for total Joint Health, including : • Glucosamine • Chondroitin sulphate • Omega 3 fatty acids (ETA, EPA, DHA) • Lyprinol • Vitamins E & C • Amino acids (glutamine, methionine) • Minerals (Zinc, Copper & Manganese)

  6. And the benefit…. • The inclusion of Green Lipped Mussel Powder • in ADVANCE Adult Large/Giant Breed can help to: • reduce pain and inflammation in the joint • prevent the incidence of joint degradation • further limit any existing degeneration of • cartilage • support the regeneration of damaged • joint cartilage and synovial fluid

  7. Green Lipped Mussel Facts: The Green Lipped Mussel Powder used in ADVANCE has been “stabilised” When GLM is added to pet food, the high temperatures used in the manufacturing process can diminish the therapeutic properties of the GLM in the end product. Mars Petcare has put a patent on this process of stabilising GLM powder, making it exclusive to ADVANCE. So, although there may be other products with joint claims on the market, ADVANCE can proudly guarantee that the ingredients we’ve put in our products for joint health will be present when the food is consumed and not destroyed during the complex manufacturing process.

  8. GASTRIC DILATION VOLVULUS is also known as gastric torsion or bloat. • It is a potentially fatal condition of deep-chested, large breed dogs. • Due to a number of reasons, the stomach fills up with gases. In many cases the stomach can also twist, which further complicates the situation. • The twisting or “volvulus” of the stomach prevents the gases from escaping and also cuts off the blood supply. If left untreated • a dog can die within 6–12 hours. • Some of the causes of Gastric Dilation Volvulus include: • breed disposition • rapidly gulping down food • eating too much in one sitting • gulping down too much water after eating • exercising straight after eating

  9. Product Feature and Benefit: The kibble in ADVANCE Adult Large/Giant Breed has been specifically formulated to reduce the incidence of gastric dilation. The size and shape of the kibble slows down the ingestion rate by encouraging the dog to chew rather than gulp down food. The feeding guide also states that the recommended daily intake should be divided into at least two meals. These two factors together help in reducing the occurrence of bloat.

  10. ADVANCE Adult Large/Giant Breed Helping to maintain healthy HEART FUNCTION Cardiac disease is estimated to be the third most common cause of death in dogs andcats. Reports suggest that over 450,000 Australian dogs have some form of cardiac disease. That is 1 in every 8 dogs. Large and giant breeds, such as Great Danes, Dobermans and Boxers, are predisposed to cardiac diseases such as Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy causes the chambers of the heart to dilate, and the papillary muscles to flatten and become atrophic. The papillary muscles are responsible for controlling the opening and closing of the valves in the heart. This leads to a reduced ability of the heart to contract efficiently which can lead to heart failure. Papillary muscle

  11. ADVANCE Adult Large/Giant Breed has been designed to support optimal Heart Health in the following three ways: 1. Increased inclusion level of Taurine 2. Increased inclusion level of Arginine 3. Increased inclusion level of Vitamin E

  12. 1. Increased levels of TAURINE– there is a well known link between taurine deficiency and Dilated Cardiomyopathy in cats. The reason why taurine is essential in healthy heart function has not been fully proven however there are many commonly accepted theories. Most dogs have an adequate blood taurine level, however studies in dogs have shown that dogs that suffer from Dilated Cardiomyopathy have also had low blood taurine. 2. Increased levels of ARGININE– arginine is an amino acid that plays a key role in regulating blood circulation and hence in maintaining vascular health. Therefore its inclusion in this ADVANCE diet may help to improve optimal circulation and heart function (Hackett 2002)

  13. Increased levels of VITAMIN E– Vitamin E plays • a major role in the body as an antioxidant. The • positive impact of Vitamin E on cardiac health is due • to its antioxidant properties (Hackett 2002) • It is such a naturally strong antioxidant due to • its chemical structure. • This chemical composition makes it highly • effective in preventing free radical damage • (oxidative damage). • Free radical action and insufficient antioxidant • protection have been implicated in the development • of many cardiac diseases.

  14. Vitamin E Study: A 1999 study by Freeman et al, showed that dogs that suffered from Dilated Cardiomyopathy had a higher level of oxidative damage compared to a control group of dogs. It was also noted that the severity of the DCM in affected dogs had a negative correlation to the level of Vitamin E in the dogs’ plasma . Therefore, the more severe the DCM, the lower the level of Vitamin E. Asides from the antioxidant action of Vitamin E, it has also been shown to promote cardiac health in a number of other ways including reducing platelet adhesion and aggregation (Hackett 2002).

  15. So to clarify…. What exactly are free radicals? A stable oxygen molecule is one which has electrons in pairs in its outer shell. Free radicals are atoms or molecules in the body that don’t have electrons in pairs, therefore making them highly unstable. In trying to become stable, they steal electrons away from other molecules and by doing so causes cell death, tissue damage and more free radicals. This process of “electron stealing” is known as oxidation. Oxidation has been linked to cardiac disease, cancers, arthritis and much more Antioxidants act to stabilise and neutralise these free radicals and therefore reduce damage to cells in the body.
