Warming up Introduce the activity by brainstorming the arrangements that have to be made for a trip. If your families are going to see you in WuHan • Q1: What would you like to arrange for them? • Q2: Where they are going to stay? • Q3:Where they are going to visit? Content
8.1 Discussing arrangements A Discussion • 1. Students look at the photographs and discuss what the situations are and match the verbs to the nouns. Give vocabulary for the various situations: catching a plane, visiting a factory, having dinner/a meeting. Content

B Listening • 1. Students look at the requirements and the diary and think what Susan Morris might do. • 2. Explain Diary is agenda, calendar or datebook in American English. Content
3. Play the recording for the first time. Learners fill in as much information in the diary as possible • 4. Play the recording a second time and get students discuss their answers before playing the recording again. Pause the tape if necessary after each of the answers. Write these names on the board: Wong, Coh and Hu. Content

C Language focus • 1. We have learnt the future as will + infinitive. While in English a present tense is often used to talk about the future, in particular when an arrangement has already been made. Content
2.Students look at the examples. We can see that there are the use of time expression to indicate that the future is being talked about. Content
3. Students look at the diary and then write sentences based on Susan's schedule. Content

D Writing • 1. Students look at the fax and decide when Mr. Harold wants to see Susan. They can suggest their own time. • 2. Students write the fax from Susan to Harold. Content

8.2 Making arrangements A. Language focus • Learners look at the notes for Asad Latif’s trip and elicit the first question, i.e. Where is he flying to? • Learners write the remaining questions. Content

3. Work in pairs. Learner A and learner B look at their respective files (File 24 on page 117 of the Learner's Book and File 25 on page 119). Learners prepare their questions, e.g. When are we ...? Content
4. Learners exchange information by asking a few questions to each other and complete the notes and diary. Content
5. Check the answers by asking questions around the class, e.g. Where is Asad Latff staying? When is he having lunch with Mr. Iralli? When is he leaving Rome? Content

B Listening and presentation • 1. Play the recording and students write the appointment in the diary (Wednesday 10 March: Meeting Mr. Alberti at 3.00 p.m.). Content

C Language focus • 1. Do some review about the language used to make and confirm arrangements. Write down the examples on the board. Content
2. Students look at the examples and practice speaking. Content
D Speaking • In pairs, students role play the conversation. They can do this face to face or as a phone call. Content
8.3 Planning a trip A Reading • 1. Read the letters. Content
2. Students plan an itinerary for Frank Shaw's visit to Europe, using the information in their books. In pairs, they fill in possible dates in the itinerary. They should do this in pencil in case they need to change anything later. Content
B Speaking Learners work out when Frank has time for these appointments and fill in the times on the schedule and then compare their suggestions with each other. Content
C Listening • 1. Students listen to Frank Shaw arranging to meet a Hungarian agent, Gabor Dombradi. • 2. Play the recording and give the details of the arrangement Content
