  2. Math Vocabulary REGROUP In SUBTRACTION… we “regroup” a mixed number by “borrowing” from the whole number to make a fraction bigger

  3. Regrouping Example: 15 ¾  14 3 + 4 14 7/4 Steps: • Go down a whole # • Numerator + Denominator (top + bottom) = NEW numerator (top) • Put together and keep same denominator (bottom)

  4. Regrouping Example: 8 1/5  7 1 + 5 7 6/5 Steps: • Down a whole # • (top + bottom) = NEW numerator (top) • Put together with same denominator (bottom)

  7. Regrouping to Subtract Example problem: Steps: • Rewrite/stack problem – if needed • Check if top fraction can subtract bottom fraction • Regroup (borrow) if needed • Subtract: whole # -whole # fraction – fraction 5. Reduce (for bonus point)
