Jog-a-thon = Fund Run • Date TBD • Please support this very important fund raiser for our class!! • Funds field trips, hands on learning, and classroom celebrations • Last year’s class went on 3 great field trips! • I did not have to ask last year’s parents for a single penny! • In addition to school-wide prizes: • 1st place: Lunch with Mrs. Irby, Homework Pass, and first choice of prize • 2nd place: Homework Pass and second choice of prize • 3rd place: Homework Pass and remaining prize
Curriculum & Instruction • Language Arts Curriculum: CA Treasures! • Access online (instructions at end of PowerPoint) • Integrates all science and social studies standards • Math: EnVision • Access online (instructions at end of PowerPoint) • PE: Mrs. Jennifer Espinoza • Fine Arts • Integrated into other areas of the curriculum
Differentiated Instruction • EL / WIN Time 10:00 to 10:30 Daily • “Whatever I Need” • Leveled Text • Approaching, On, Beyond, and English Language Learner • Spelling • Pre-test determines words to study • Math • Students who score 95% on pre-test may work on extensions or acceleration activities • Homework enrichment (students who score 100% on the daily “quiz may print and complete the Enrichment worksheet instead of the assigned homework) • Fluency • Students who already read 100wcpm may work independently on an alternate assignment during most phonics instruction
Grades • ADVANCED (4): Student consistently meets and often exceeds the grade level standard • PROFICIENT(3): Student regularly meets the grade level standard • BASIC (2): Student is aspiring to and occasionally does meet the grade level standard • BELOW BASIC (1): Student is working one or more years below grade level Remember: IT’S ABOUT THE LEARNING, NOT THE GRADE! No college or employer ever asks to see an applicant’s elementary school transcripts. This is an ideal time to take academic risks and learn that no one is perfect.
Attendance • School begins at 7:45am • Students are considered tardy at 7:46am • Students who arrive after 8:00am must report to the office for a tardy slip before they come to class • E-mail or call the office if you know your child will be absent • Attendance Money • Each time your child is absent – for any reason - our school loses much needed money. • Try to plan trips around our school calendar. • Independent Study is for planned absences of at least 5 days. The school does not lose money if your child completes and turns in their Independent Study Packet. Please provide the office and teacher at least two weeks in advance when requesting Independent Study.

Volunteers • Volunteers are Welcome, Needed, and Appreciated! • Volunteer Schedule / Sign Up is on the back table • This year, I need volunteers to • Take care of paperwork AND / OR • Work with a small group of students from 10:00 to 10:30 • Note: All field trip chaperones must have fingerprints on file with the Natomas Unified School District. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

Accelerated ReaderThis is our motivational reading program. • How to Find Out the Level of a Book: • Go to www.arbookfind.com and type in the name of the book. • There are tens of thousands of books in the system, but not all books are in the system. • How to Get Alerts from A.R.: • Go to https://hosted218.renlearn.com/287932/homeconnect/login.aspx • User Name: __________________________________________________ • Password: ___________________________________________________ • If you sign up for e-mail alerts, A.R. will e-mail you your child’s score each time they take an online quiz. • Keep in mind that our Comprehension Goal is always 85% or higher. If your child is not scoring in that range, they may need to a.) slow down or b.) read books at a lower level. If your child reads an AR book at home (by themselves, with you, or you read it to them), send the book to school along with the Book Level and Quiz Number so they may take a quiz on it at school.
