Background • Born November 19, 1976 • Creator of Twitter • In 2012, The Wall Street Journal presented him with the "Innovator of the Year Award" for technology. • He first attended Missouri University of Science and Technology and then transferred to New York University. • When Dorsey was about 13 years old, he was very interested in dispatch routing. • Some of this software he invented is still used by many taxi cab companies. • He also had other technology ideas that included networks of medical devices.

Twitter • Twitter is an online social networking service and micro blogging service that allows users to send and read text-based “tweets” or messages of up to 140 characters. • Twitter rapidly developed and became increasingly popular worldwide. • As of 2012, there were 500 million registered users. • Unregistered users can also access public tweets. • Dorsey had this idea of creating a software in which people could share statuses and messages among friends easily. TWITTER TIMELINE: • In 2000, Dorsey had an idea for a web-based realtime status/short message communication service. • This lead to the creation of the popular media website: Twitter • Twitter was launched July 5, 2006. • On September 14, 2010, Twitter launched a redesigned site with a new logo.

Interesting Information • Similar to other computer science entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey dropped out of college before receiving his degree. • Twitter was used by U.S. Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain in 2008. • The first off-Earth Twitter message was “tweeted” from the International Space Station on January 22, 2010 by NASA astronaut T.J. Creamer. Twitter in the Classroom •  Teachers can utilize twitter in their classrooms to unite students. • Trending topics can promote creativity and new ideas. • Create a tight-knit community of learners • With an authoring technology tool like Twitter students can collaborate with each other and the public.
