  1. Free Technology Resources to Engage the CCSS Beth Vinson & Dawn Bauer Denver Public Schools Elizabeth_vinson@dpsk12.org Dawn_bauer@dpsk12.org

  2. Session Objective • During this session you will learn about and experience many online activities that will help students deepen conceptual understanding of CCSS.

  3. DPS and DU Partnership • During the 2012-2013 school year DPS and DU worked together to create a Math and Science Leadership Cadre. This team met several times throughout the year to discuss and learn more about the instructional shifts necessary to implement the CCSS in mathematics properly. • Last summer, we came together to review free online resources and here are some of our favorites.

  4. Why use technology? Beginning in 2014, our statewide assessments for math will all be done online. The PARCC assessment will require that all students are proficient in manipulating number lines, fraction bars, array models, and text boxes. In order to prepare our students for these assessments and real life, we need to be using technology as often as we can.

  5. PARCC Prototype Item-Gr. 5

  6. Fun and Colorful Visual Representations • Provide a Context for Practicing Skills • Motivates Students through Immediate and Positive Feedback • Opportunity to Click, Drag, Drop, and Group Objects http://illuminations.nctm.org

  7. Ten Frame For any number from 1-9 find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number using objects or drawings. http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=75

  8. Okta’s Rescue *Subitizing *Counting to Ten *Number Line Practice http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=219

  9. Grouping and Grazing Simple joining situations with a set of objects. http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=218

  10. How many under the shell? Represent addition and subtraction with images. http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=198

  11. Coin Box Work with money. *Exchange *Make Change *Count Coins http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=217

  12. Concentration Compare Numbers Count to Tell # of Objects Subitize http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=73

  13. Factorize Multiplication Fluency Understanding Factors and Multiples Create rectangular arrays to show multiplication http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=64

  14. Fraction Game Equivalent fractions Try to make 1 whole on each number Line using the fewest cards possible http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=18

  15. Cubes Volume of rectangular prisms Use concrete model to create abstract rule. http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=6

  16. The Quotient Café Divide multi-digit whole numbers Conceptualize division by sharing equal parts. http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=224

  17. The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives (NLVM) is an NSF supported project that began in 1999 to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (K-12 emphasis). The project includes dissemination and extensive internal and external evaluation. • Many of the activities here allow us to use manipulatives without actually having these items in the classroom. http://nlvm.usu.edu/

  18. Hundreds Chart Count to 100. Know number names and the count sequence. http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/frames_asid_337_g_1_t_1.html?from=category_g_1_t_1.html

  23. Number Line Bounce Fluency with addition and subtraction Make a target number and equation with four given numbers.

  24. Fractions - Comparing Develop understanding of fractions as numbers. Create Equivalent Fractions and Identify fractions on a number line. http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/frames_asid_159_g_2_t_1.html?from=category_g_2_t_1.html

  28. Other math sites to consider… • MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS • Tenmarks.com • Ixl.com • Khanacademy.com • Edmodo.com FACT PRACTICE • Gregtangmath.com • Xtramath.com • multiplication.com Many of these sites allow you to track student use and achievement. They also provide differentiation opportunities for the various learners in your classroom.

  29. Gregtangmath.com Practice basic addition or multiplication facts with a fast-paced game of Kakooma. Various levels of play allow for many differentiation options. http://gregtangmath.com/Kakooma/Kakooma?gameType=Addition

  30. TenMarks.com Teach and track student progress with various CCSS concepts. Rigorous questions! https://www.tenmarks.com/teacher/assignment

  31. Time to Explore • Please use the last 15 minutes to explore the resources provided for each grade level and standard. • There are hundreds more great websites and apps that we couldn’t possibly list them all. • Share with others if you come across other terrific math resources! Thank you!
