  2. Purpose • The conference claims to conduct a thorough examination of the present condition of MICE industry so as to make concrete proposals for the further development of MICE industry in Taiwan for the 21st century

  3. Program-1st day Lectures 1. International Games and City Marketing—the case of Kaohsiung World Games 2. International bidding and city marketing 3. MICE industry under global financial crisis and the development of MICE human resources—the case of Macao 4. Deaflympics and Taipei Flower show 5. General discussions: MICE industry trends in Asia International MICE activities and city marketing MICE advantages and development in southern Taiwan

  4. Program-2nd day Paper Presentations 1. A. MICE industry development and the appropriation of cultural resources B. Green trends and environmental concerns in the MICE industry 2. A. City tourism and city competitive and the MICE industry B. MICE development trends 3. General Discussion of the MICE industry -Human Resources -Professional Training -Education and Certification

  5. Quality of Program • The only informative lecture came from the speaker from Macao who spoke on the actual integration of the casino business and the MICE industry in that city • Most papers were similar in content and quite tedious and boring

  6. Advantages • Staff members wear stylish and distinguished uniform

  7. Staff was on hand at the main gate of the university to direct attendees to the venue

  8. Huge banner at the entrance of the venue marks the site and the theme

  9. Smooth registration Conference packet Sign in badges

  10. Signing in for pre-registered participants

  11. Name badges and lunch tickets

  12. Display of previous accomplishments Nicely arranged but no staff to provide further explanation

  14. Further Advantages • Interpreter (English to Chinese ) provided for non-native speaker • Well-known speakers from • Cool globe Organization • Macau university • Convenient location of venue on campus with hotel next door and transportation easy

  15. Disadvantages • Planning • Poor time allotment (opening remarks ran overtime by an hour) • Award ceremony set at the very end; most recipients had already left • Tour plans overlap with last day of conference thus affecting attendance

  16. Staff • Chatting among themselves all the time • Not attentive to guest needs • Passive attitude

  17. When schedule was delayed due to poor planning and poor moderating, and refreshment time was cut short to 5 minutes only, staff member continued to ring bell and shout to rush attendees Rude staff member

  18. Facilities • No staff stationed in the conference hall: air conditioner problem left unattended for quite a while • Technical problems cause confusion (ex. microphone, video, overhead projector) • Unclear directions • Untidy bathroom

  19. Quality lunch? • Others • Heavy program book, no editing before printing • Certificate of attendance leaves name blank even with pre-registration

  20. Prospect for the Future of MICE industry in Taiwan

  21. Mega event and… ? Spurred on by the 2009 World Game in Kaohsiung and the 2009 Deaflympics in Taipei, Tainan also aspires to be a host city for mega events Uniqueness of city scene & Government support are key to such plans

  22. Country and City Ranking Most conferences held: USA Most conferences held in Asia: Japan Taiwan ranked the eighth in Asia, behind China, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, India, Malaysia

  23. What can Taiwan cities offer? Macau Gambling Brazil Government Incentive to promote the 5th largest city Taiwan Taipei 101, the tallest building in the world? What else is there? A safe, comfortable and convenient environment may be the key

  24. Local color and local flavor • Research into local histories, cultural resources • Modernize the traditional • Construct (verbal and visual) narratives to highlight local flavor • Enhance hospitality facilities and personnel
