LBJ’S POLITICAL TIMELINE • 1937: House of Representatives • Known as a “New Dealer” during the Great Depression • Worked with FDR to help struggling farmers • 1948: Senate • Only won by 87 votes, so he needed to work for approval • 1955: Senate Majority Leader • “Leader” of the Democrats in the Senate • Top of the Democratic Party (Eisenhower [President] = Republican) • 1957: Led Civil Rights Act of 1957(voting rights) to passage • Caught the eye of JFK because of Civil Rights & Texas/Protestant background = LBJ runs as JFK’s Vice President • JFK only won because of LBJ (TX won by a few thousand votes)
LBJ’S POLITICAL TIMELINE • November 22,1963: JFK assassinated in Dallas • LBJ becomes President • Only one year as President to win over the public & get reelected • “Let us continue” to solve national and world problems like JFK • Legislation started by JFK & passed under LBJ • Tax Reduction Act: lower taxes $11 billion to boost consumer spending • Lowered fed deficit/debt from $6 billion to $4 billion in two years • Civil Rights Act1964: allowed federal government to enforce prohibition of discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, and gender

1964ELECTION: JOHNSON REELECTED • Opponent = Conservative Republican Goldwater • Against government spending on social programs (opposite) • Pushed for U.S. intervention in Vietnam to stop Communism • Lyndon B. Johnson • Great Society • 1962-73: Poverty decreased from 25% to 11% • Deficit spending (need higher taxes to avoid higher federal debt) • U.S. Intervention in Vietnam “would offer no solution” • 1965: Johnson decides to enter Vietnam War & drains funding for his Great Society • 1968 Election: LBJ chooses not to run for reelection • Republican Victory (Nixon) • LBJ Wins 1964 Landslide Victory (61% of popular vote) • Democrats win large Congressional majority • LBJ does not need Republican support to pass reform laws • 206 passed in 4 years
