  1. Video Conferencing in Primary School Mathematics Adam Boddison University of Warwick

  2. How the project came about… • A need to provide for most able children in primary schools (could work for any ability group) • Meeting of Headteachers… • Partly logistics/cost and partly by design • Focus on pedagogy rather than technology

  3. Aims and Objectives • To create a gifted and talented mathematics community • Improve the transition process • Development of independent learning skills • Improve key skills; confidence, communication… • Increase attainment

  4. Video conferencing is not a show!

  5. Challenges • Funding • Timetabling across 7 schools • Technical issues (one-man show!) • Behaviour management (remotely) • Monitoring pupils (on task) • Supervision Issues • Number of pupils at each endpoint • Differences in times!

  6. Progress to date • Small number of pupils going to state school rather than private school • Pupils taking more responsibility for their own learning • Positive impact on other ability groups not involved with video conferencing • Perception of maths; enthused and motivated

  7. Progress to date • Use of music as a trigger • Design of tasks; open-ended and differentiation by outcome • Development of behaviour management strategies • NO decrease in attainment

  8. Comments from the Pupils • The work that we get challenges our ability more than the usual maths lessons down in our year 6 classroom • I really enjoyed the video conferencing and hope I might be able to continue it at secondary school. • I didn't think maths could be this fun and I love a lot of challenges.

  9. Comments from the Pupils • I think I've got better at working out sums and problems. • There's only one thing I don't like about the video conferencing and that's that sometimes the screen freezes. • I really enjoy video conferencing it's the highlight of my day on Friday and I always look forward to it.

  10. Comments from the Pupils • I am a lot better at problems now it's also really fun. • I found out that it's definitely a lot harder to prove some thing true than prove something wrong. • Video Conferencing is the best block of lessons I've ever had and given the chance I would jump to do it again.
