Assassination • Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary announced he would visit Sarajevo, Bosnia • Bosnia: • under control of Austria-Hungary Empire • had many Slavs and Serbs • Serbian nationalists angered viewed Austrians as foreign oppressors • Terrorist group the Black Hand vowed to take action • Archduke ignored warnings • June 28, 1914 he and his wife, Sofie, rode through the capital in an open car both were shot and killed • Conspirator named GavriloPrincip
Austria Strikes Back • Austria reluctant to go to war sent Serbia an ultimatum • To avoid war: • Serbia must end all anti-Austrian agitation • Punish any Serbian official involved in the murder plot. • Must let Austria join the investigation • Serbia agreed to most but not all gave Austria the opportunity to declare war • July 28, 1914 Austria declared war on Serbia
Reaction to War • Outbreak of war gave relief to internal divisions • Renewed sense of patriotism united countries • Governments on both sides emphasized that they were fighting for justice and a better world • Young men rushed to enlist seemed like an exciting adventure
