  1. Tea Act - 1773 • This act put a tax on tea. The British Parliament agreed to help the failing East India Co. by giving them a monopoly.

  2. Intolerable Acts - 1774 • Punishment for the BTP • 1) The colonies must pay for the tea they destroyed • 2) Boston Harbor would be closed to all trade until the tea was paid • 3) The colonies could no longer make any rules for themselves

  3. Boston Tea Party Date: December 16, 1773 Cause: Passage of the Tea Act Facts • East India Co. was going bankrupt, so England gave them a monopoly on tea sales • Colonists refused to take tea or pay tax; dockworkers wouldn't unload 7 ships; 4 returned to England

  4. Boston Tea Party • the Eleanor, Beaver, and Dartmouth were not allowed to leave until the colonists took the tea • in protest, 50 Sons of Liberty dressed up as Mohawk Indians and threw the tea overboard into Boston Harbor • They swept the decks clean and did no damage to the ship or other cargo

  5. Boston Tea Party Results • Sam Adams hoped the BTP would unite the colonists, but it didn't • England's punishment, the Intolerable Acts, DID unite them!

  6. First Continental Congress • Sept. 1774 – Philadelphia, PA • 12 out of 13 colonies • Most still wanted to remain British citizens • Declaration of Grievances sent to the king • Agreed to meet in May 1775 if their issues had not been addressed
