Gender • Do boys and girls look at the world in the same way? • If not – How do male and female viewpoints differ? • What creates the differences? – biology, society, peer groups, media?
Read the two stanzas you have been given… • Write down anything in the stanza that are relevant to gender • Are there any conventional/unconventional viewpoints/descriptions in terms of gender? • Is the ‘I’ in the poem male or female? What evidence can you provide to support this?
Order the Poem • Now you have all the stanzas, arrange them in what you consider to be the correct order. • Be prepared to give reasons for your choice. • Look for use of tense, what would make a good closing statement, development of a train of thought or theme etc.
Listen to the Whole Poem • What is your response to the whole poem? • What do you think of the speaker? • Are any of the ideas far-fetched?
Now look at the REAL Poem! • Only the gender references have been changed. • How does this impact on your reading of the poem? • Having now read Yeats’ real poem – do you think he writes about women in a conventional way or an unconventional way?
