Stanford Center for Professional Development The Stanford Center for Professional Development develops and delivers programs, courses and services using telecommunications, multimedia and campus-based solutions to support the advanced educational needs of technical professionals, managers and executives.

  3. Stanford Online Vision To make Stanford’s rich intellectual content accessible, flexible and convenient in order to address the information, know-ledge and education needs of today’s professional workforce.

  4. Stanford Online • Transformed from research project into Stanford Online program in Spring 1997. • Compaq Computer and Microsoft are strategic partners. • SCPD televises 75 courses per quarter and a subset of these are also available via Stanford Online.

  5. Stanford Online • Over 250 courses and 6,000 students since 1997. • Available at 28.8bps (8fps) or 128 kpbs (15 fps). • Courses updated quarterly to maintain currency. • Approach is transparent to faculty.

  7. Stanford Online • Fosters asynchronous interaction between student and faculty. • Access at work, at home or while traveling. • Extensive use by on-campus students. • Digital assets: 10,000 new program hours produced annually.

Stanford Online Programs • Courses in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering/Engineering Management and Mechanical Engineering • MS Degree in Electrical Engineering with Telecommunications focus • Certificates in Telecommunications and Bioinformatics • Professional education courses and conferences

  9. Summary of Feedback To Date • Online learning attracts students who would not otherwise have taken course • Convenience is critical for busy students • Video online has value • Significant benefit for campus students and faculty • Students satisfied with learning via Stanford Online

Lessons Learned • Stimulate faculty efforts with incentives, rewards and support. • Provide students with flexibility and choice. • Address consequences of use patterns by off campus vs on campus students. • Develop a learning community with meaningful interaction, collaboration and engagement.

Lessons Learned • Apply equipment and connectivity standards for compatibility, interoperability and gateways - - new and cutting edge not necessarily best. • Provide solid support services to faculty. • Offer reliable and responsive support services to students. • Don’t let cost recovery/revenue be the main driver.

  12. Transitioning Courses to Online Learning • Review present state and leverage existing content • Assess technology options - make it “transparent” to faculty and students • Estimate life cycle costs • Choose internal or external transition support

  13. Transitioning Courses to Online Learning • Develop course design - think modular • Develop course management features - think scalable • Produce prototype • Conduct serious assessment
