Outline • History of CEN undergraduate (UG) program • 1999 • 2006 • Current state of CEN-UG program • CEN-UG program goals • Charge from Dean’s office • Immediate goals • Beyond ABET • Plans and action items • Conclusions
CEN-UG Program: History • Joint-CEN program created (1999) http://www.cise.ufl.edu/dept/abet/rand04ab2/Direct-Assessments/Establishment-OEs-POs/Steering-Committee/old-policies.pdf • Software track – housed in CISE Department • Hardware track – housed in ECE Department • Governance: • CISE faculty/curriculum committee • ECE faculty/curriculum committee • Updated CEN Program Governing Procedures (2006) http://www.cise.ufl.edu/dept/abet/rand04ab2/CEN_Governance_2006.pdf • CEN Faculty • CEN Curriculum Committee • CEN Representative on COE Curriculum Committee • IAB – Industrial Advisory Board Good ideas, but not fully implemented
Program Goals • Charge from Dean’s office: • Achieve our potential as a vibrant world-class CEN program • With active participation from all stakeholders: faculties from both CISE and ECE departments, employers, alumni, and students. • Immediate goal: address ABET-related issues • “Sufficient authority for program guidance, evaluation, assessment, and improvement” • Formation of CEN Industrial Advisory Board • Capstone senior-design course • Common 1st and 2nd years for both tracks • Vision for CEN-UG program • Beyond ABET • What are our program goals?
Plans and Action Items • No major restructuring required • Just do what we set out to do 6 years ago • CEN-UG curriculum committee (Chair: H. Lam) • CISE: M. Bermudez, D. Dankel, P. Fishwick • ECE: R. Fox, J. McNair, A. Gordon-Ross • Immediate task: address ABET issues • CEN Industrial Advisory Board • A subset of CISE/ECE IABs • CEN-UG steering committee Consists of faculty members from both departments • Determine long-term vision for CEN-UG program • Define objectives to realize vision • Charge CEN-UG curriculum committee to implement objectives Just kidding
Conclusions • Short-term priority • Address ABET-related issues • Long-term vision • CEN education must not be static • CEN and world around us changed dramatically in last 12 yrsand will continue to change • Are we educating our computer engineers accordingly? • CEN program has potential to be world-class • Plans to revitalize CEN program • Enable and facilitate active participation from all stakeholders • Best use of CEN program governing structure to support continuous improvement to CEN program
