  3. Today – “Best in Class” • Only Department of Defense activity dedicated to operational entomology • Center of Excellence for the development and evaluation of novel technologies to better protect deployed war-fighters from blood feeding insects that transmit disease

Readiness • Marines Who Went to Liberia Come Down With Malaria – 2003 • Navy looks for answers after Seabee dies from malaria – 2010 • GIs With Malaria May Face Punishment – 2010 • Army statistics report from January 2003 through October 2004 there were 660 cases of leishmaniasis, 71 cases of malaria and 119 cases of assorted other illnesses vectored by arthropods in the CENTCOM AOR

  6. Risk • Malaria • - 90 countries, 2.5 billion at risk • - 1-2 million fatalities annually • Dengue • - 100 countries, 2.5 billion at risk • 50 million cases annually • Leishmaniasis • - 88 countries, 350 million at risk • - 2 million new cases annually

  9. Accomplishments • DoD’s Pesticide Application Equipment Testing and Evaluation Center • Over 200 journal articles published • Multiple application techniques evaluated for effectiveness • Hundreds of compounds evaluated for insecticidal properties

  10. Future • The Navy Entomology Center of Excellence will be recognized as a global center of choice for the evaluation of novel pesticide application equipment, technologies, and operational and pest management services for the war-fighter • Continue to leverage collaborations through the Deployed War-fighters Protection (DWFP) Program to discover novel insecticides, vector control techniques and equipment
