  6. GEB Work Group Recent Activities The GEB Work Group has been profiling examples of successful geospatial technology implementations in the federal government and identifying trends, commonalities, and best practices. The GEB Work Group then shares these examples and best practices with federal agencies, partners, and the general public.

  7. Review of Use Cases Use Cases Best Practices • Interviewed and developed use cases and fact sheets for 13 agencies (to date) • CDC used GIS to aid relief after the Myanmar Cyclone • HUD provides crucial address validation with geocoding • BLM's NILS GeoCommunicator converts coordinates from latitude/longitude to township/range and vice-versa • DOJ's MAPS program allows law enforcement officials to map crime and use GIS tools to predict where a criminal may strike • FEMA created an Enterprise GIS Office that coordinates GIS and provides professional and technical GIS services Sharing and Outreach

  8. Use Case: USDA's CLU Data Layer Use Cases Best Practices • USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) • Mission: support American agriculture through resource conservation, disaster response and stabilization of farm income • Common Land Unit (CLU) Data Layer • Accurate maps of farm land and crops are critical for FSA • Over 7 years, FSA digitized 2 million+ land records from 2,300+ offices around the country • FSA compiled records into a central enterprise wide database using ArcGIS/SDE tools • Benefits of CLU • Numerous authorized stakeholders productively make use of data • Centralized data and streamlined visualization process leads to significant cost and time savings Continued Outreach

  9. Best Practices Use Cases Best Practices • The GEB Best Practices document describes lessons, trends, and benefits observed in use cases • Includes a survey of existing best practice reports to augment GEB research • Some Key Themes and Observations • Focus on interoperability and reuse • Increasing role of Enterprise GIS Offices/Coordination • Increasing integration of GIS tools in various environments • Use of Web 2.0 technologies to complement standard GIS interfaces • Key role for stakeholders Sharing and Outreach
