The Student Veteran • General Profile: • Many of same attributes of Adult Learner (http://online.rit.edu/faculty/teaching_strategies/adult_learners.cfm) • Problem-centered; seek educational solutions to where they are at this point in time compared to where they want to be in life • Results-oriented; have specific results in mind for education - will drop out if education does not lead to those results because their participation is usually voluntary • Self-directed; typically not dependent on others for direction

The Student Veteran • General Profile: • Many of same attributes of an Adult Learner (http://online.rit.edu/faculty/teaching_strategies/adult_learners.cfm) • Often skeptical about new information; prefer to try it out before accepting it • Seek education that relates or applies directly to their perceived needs, that is timely and appropriate for their current lives • Accept responsibility for their own learning if learning is perceived as timely and appropriate • Lives off-campus; may be married, may have family

The Transition Process: (from a presentation given by Dr. Corey Rumann, Assistant Professor and Director of the College Student Affairs Program University of West Georgia) Going from structured (i.e., military) to unstructured (i.e., college) environment May be asked inappropriate questions (e.g., Did you kill anyone over there?) “Minor” challenges and frustrations (e.g., loan repayment, insurance, curriculum issues, access to college facilities)

Support and Strategies: (from a presentation given by Dr. Corey Rumann, Assistant Professor and Director of the College Student Affairs Program University of West Georgia) Family members, military peers, and certifying officials tend to serve as primary sources of support. Student veterans may actively seek out other veterans if opportunities to do so exist. Try to stay busy and maintain a routine if possible. May feel disconnected from civilian friends and non-military college student peers.

Top 10 Things to Make Student Veterans a Priority: (from a presentation given by Dr. Mark Allen Poisel , Associate Provost, Pace University) • Establish a veteran friendly environment. • Develop good policies and procedures. • Build strong relationships and partnerships. • Prepare veterans for the student experience. • Require orientation and make it applicable. • Focus on student engagement. • Assess your culture and programs. • Exchange data and information.

Veteran Services • Bethany Glassbrenner / Lena HuntsmanCentral Veteran Education Benefit Resource: • Apply for Benefits • Chapter 30 • Montgomery GI Bill (pre-9/11) • Chapter 31 • Vocational Rehabilitation • Chapter 33 • Post 9/11 GI Bill (can be transferred to dependents) • Chapter 35 • Dependents of Permanently Disabled Vets • Certify Hours • GI Bill Payment Issues • Registrar Office functions

Veteran Services • Central Veteran Education Benefit Resource: • GI Bill Benefits • Veterans who have served at least 90 days of active duty service after September 10, 2001, and received an honorable discharge, qualify for the Post-9/11 GI Bill. To qualify for 100% benefit a veteran must have served at least 3 years of active duty after September 10, 2001. If the vet served less than 3 years, the benefits are pro-rated. • Veterans get 36 months of full-time entitlement under most GI Bill programs.  The benefits are charged according the time in school.If the vet is going to school fulltime for 4 months, they use up 4 months of benefits; if they go to school 1/2 time for 4 months, they use up 2 months of entitlement.

Veteran Services • Central Veteran Education Benefit Resource: • GI Bill Benefits • Veterans who withdraw have to report their withdrawal to Veteran Services and the VA adjusts their award. • Veterans get a basic allowance for housing. The amount is less if they are not enrolled full-time but student vets must be enrolled at least 51% of full-time to be eligible for housing benefits.

Veteran Services • Central Veteran Education Benefit Resource: • GI Bill Benefits • Must be enrolled in face-to-face classes to be eligible for full housing benefits. • Post-9/11 GI Bill eligible veterans will be able to get a monthly living stipend if they are not in online classes and not traditional classroom courses. The stipend for online students will be significantly different from the traditional classroom student version. Online students will get half of the • national average stipend.

Veteran Services • Central Veteran Education Benefit Resource: • GI Bill Benefits • Student vets who are on academic probation at their home school have 2 (two!) semesters to get off of probation. If they do not, they will not be certified for benefits in future semesters until they are in good academic standing again.

V.I.T.A.L.Veterans IntegrationTo Academic LeadershipDr. Bryan BatienLiaison with Orlando VA Medical Center • Refer and work with university disability services to request academic accommodations. • Treatment for adjustment, stress, anger, depression, anxiety, sleep problems and PTSD. • Support with University processes regarding academic actions and/or conduct issues. • Obtain help and resources from within the Orlando VA and its affiliates including: Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) and Vocational Rehabilitation.
