Outcomes The participant will gain: • conceptual knowledge of networks • knowledge of network components • hands on experience creating a simple LAN • handson experience creating a wireless LAN • technology support issues • review student technology standards • observe selected students’ projects

  3. Knowledge of Networks Networks are a means to: • share resources • computers, printers, servers, access to Internet • store files -- documents, audio, video • communicate • retrieve information

  4. Knowledge of Networks Starting at the computer or printer is a Network card

  5. Knowledge of Networks Network Card is connected to a Cat5 cable • Eight Copper wires • Jack is wider than a phone line

  6. Knowledge of Networks • Cable is connected to device in the classroom that changes the electric signal to a light signal

  7. Knowledge of Networks • Light signal is carried along a Fiber Optic Cable

  8. Knowledge of Networks The fiber optic cable joins other cables in pipes or conduit to boxes that combine and distribute connections

  9. Knowledge of Networks The central cabinets that hold most of the connections for the Internet access is the Main Distribution Frame.

  10. Knowledge of Networks This central set of cabinets or Main Distribution Frame has: • a battery backup • server for storage • fans that need to be on all the time • air conditioning -- if possible

  11. Knowledge of Networks The wire connecting the school’s LAN or Local Area network to the Internet is • a T1 line • at appears similar to a phone line • carries 50+ times more data than a modem

  17. Make a Small Network • LAN - Local Area Network • connect laptop to hub with Cat5 cable • connect second laptop to hub with Cat5 cable • laptops are configured to share access to each other • share files

  18. Make a Wireless Network • using a wireless network system, PCs and Apples can network. • Airport is on • turn on laptops • check signal strength • try Internet access • try sending a file to another computer

  19. Network Review What does each component do: • Network card? • CAT5 Cable? • Media Converter or Switch? • Fiber Optic Cable • Main Distribution Cabinet? • T1

  20. Technology Support • Industry - fulltime support person for every 30 computers. • District - fulltime support person for every 100+ computers • Network support - one fulltime person for every 20 schools

  21. Technology Support • Support of development from site staffs • Exodus of motivated teachers if schools are not moving ahead • LACOE, LAUSD, Local G, and Community Colleges offer training • Technology Support • Instructional • Entry level training for network Sept - Nov.
