  2. Current Bell Schedule • High School/Middle School • 7:40- 2:15 (7:20 bus arrival time) • Elementary School • 9:00- 3:15 (8:30 bus arrival time) • 163 Contracted bus driver positions

  3. Pros & Cons • Pros • No change in starting or dismissal time • 8th graders would be able to play J. V. sports at the high schools • High school students attending Governor’s school are able to take more classes before leaving their base school • Childcare – older students home before elementary dismissal • Cons • No estimated savings • Bus drivers would not be eligible for school health insurance • Need to purchase five (5) additional buses at an estimated $585,000 • Built in coverage would not exist and routes would remain difficult to cover with no/few substitutes • Congestion at KFH/KFM and on Route 58 with LHS/FG would remain • Double runs would need to be utilized

  4. Proposed Staggered Bell Schedule #1 • Middle School- 7:25-2:00 (7:00 bus arrival) • High School- 8:30-3:05 (8:05 bus arrival) • Elementary A- 9:15- 3:30 ( 8:45 bus arrival) • Elementary B- 9:40- 3:55 (9:10 bus arrival) • 133 Contracted bus driver positions

  5. Proposed Staggered Bell Schedule #1 • Elementary A - 9:15- 3:30 (8:45 bus arrival): • Driver Elem. Elephants Fork Elem. • Florence Bowser Elem. Kilby Shores Elem. • Mack Benn, Jr. Elem. Northern Shores Elem. • Elementary B - 9:40- 3:55 (9:10 bus arrival): • B.T. Washington Elem Creekside Elem. • Hillpoint Elem. Nansemond Parkway Elem. • Oakland Elem. Southwestern Elem.

  6. Pros & Cons • Pros: • Reduction to 133 contracts. Savings around $680,000 • Absent drivers would be easier to cover allowing the student to arrive and depart the school on time • Congestion at KFH/KFM and on Route 58 with LHS/FG is reduced or eliminated • More available drivers means shorter routes • 8th graders would be able to play J. V. sports at the high schools • Cons: • High school students attending Governor’s school would only be able to take four classes before leaving their base school • The later 9:40 a.m. starting time and the 3:55 p.m. dismissal time for those students assigned the Elementary B Schedule • Later time for elementary students arriving home interfering with afterschool activities and general activities such as playtime, meals, homework, and getting ready for bed • Childcare would be a major concern - Elementary A students coming home prior to older siblings and Elementary B students going to school after many parents had to be at work

Additional Proposals • Plan #2 • Elementary “A” 7:25-1:40 (7:00 bus arrival) • (BTW, CS, EFE, NP, OAK, SW) • Elementary “B” 8:00- 2:15 (7:30 bus arrival) • (DR/FB, HP, KS, MB, NS) • High School 8:30- 3:05 (8:00 bus arrival) • Middle School 9:10- 3:45 (8:40 bus arrival) • 133 bus driver contracted positions on a 30/hr. contract.

  8. Pros & Cons • Pros: • Reduction to 133 contracts. Savings around $680,000 • Absent drivers would be easier to cover allowing the student to arrive and depart the school on time • Congestion at KFH/KFM and on Route 58 with LHS/FG is reduced or eliminated • More available drivers means shorter routes • Elementary students would go to school earlier and some students could be dropped off by parents before going to work • Elementary starting and dismissal times would be closer to the present schedule • Cons: • 8th graders would not be able to participate in JV sports or be late to practice • High school students attending Governor’s school would only be able to take four classes before leaving their base school • Childcare would be a major concern - Elementary students coming home prior to older siblings

Additional Proposals • Plan #3 • Middle School 7:25-2:00 (7:00 bus arrival) • High School 8:30- 3:05 (8:00 bus arrival) • Elementary “A” 8:30- 2:45 (8:00 bus arrival) • (BTW, EFE, KS, NS, OAK, SW) • Elementary “B: 9:15- 3:30 (8:45 bus arrival) • (CS, DR/FB, HP, MB, NP) • 145 bus driver contracted positions on a 30/hr contract, but some runs paired with activity runs.

  10. Pros & Cons • Pros: • Reduction to 145 contracts. Savings around $400,000. • Congestion at KFH/KFM and on Route 58 with LHS/FG is reduced or eliminated. • More available drivers means shorter routes (not as many for high school and Elementary A). • 8th graders would be able to play J. V. sports at the high schools • Some elementary students would go to school earlier and could be dropped off by parents before going to work • Cons: • Some bus routes will be paired with afterschool activity runs. • High school students attending Governor’s school would only be able to take four classes before leaving their base school • Less built in coverage for absent drivers • Childcare – some elementary students would come home prior to older siblings
