  1. Pollution Caused by the Forestry Industry

  2. Chemical Pollution (especially Mercury Poisoning) • The chemicals used in the processing of paper and other wood products are dumped into the river. • These chemicals, being heavier than water, settle to the bottom and mix into the silt. • The plants growing in the silt will now carry these toxins. Any fish that eats these plants will also be poisoned. • When people eat the fish (in sufficient quantity), they too become poisoned.

  3. Solution: • Install filters in the drainage system to prevent these chemicals from entering the water system

  4. Noise Pollution • Excess noise from the processing plants can dramatically affect the wildlife of the area. • In many cases, an excess of noise can alter the migratory path of the animals, prevent them from procreating, or even cause them to leave the habitat permanently.

  5. Solution: • Place baffles or other noise-reduction devises on the various mechanisms. • Locate the plant where it will have the least impact on the wildlife

  6. Thermal Pollution • Hot water is used in the production of paper and other wood products. • If the waste water is not properly cooled before being dumped into the river, the temperature of the river can be altered. • This can result in the deaths of various fish and plant species within that section of the river. • The influence of thermal pollution can be felt all along the river, and within the food chain that the fish and plants are part of.

  7. Solution: • Install retaining ponds where the used hot water is held until it cools to an appropriate temperature.

  8. Logs Being Stored on the River • Logs are often floated downriver to the sawmill or other processing plant in large “booms”. • These booms consist of many logs packed closely together. • If these booms are stored on the river, the sunlight cannot penetrate to the water beneath them. • This results in the slowing down of oxygen production. As a result, the plants and fish in the area will die.

  9. Solution: • Store the logs on land.
